Chapter Three
After the bath ended in silence, Yuri consulted a dictionary. One would not expect to find the answers to life's most confusing questions in a dictionary, and neither did Yuri, yet he read it anyway. Such a book could at least provide him with the literal meaning of the word he was searching for, though not the meaning hidden behind him, the meaning that he truly wished to know.
The dictionary presented several meanings for the word wimp, and Yuri felt silly for even trying to look it up. In the back of his mind he expected an elaborate definition of meaningful significance in the context of this world of New Mazoku.
"Weak, cowardly, timid, lacking confidence..." Yuri closed the book, he knew the meaning of the word alright, and it did not help at all. Was he truly so desperate that he would resort to even a dictionary to seek the answer to the eternal mystery of Wolfram's mind? But if a slap was a proposal, and picking up a knife was a duel, then he wouldn't put it past this world to hide something meaningful in such a common word.
Conrad entered the Maoh's office, as the door was left open, and took note of the dictionary on the desk. "What word were you looking up?"
"Wimp," Yuri watched as Conrad gave him a somewhat amused look.
"I thought you knew that word quite well." Conrad made a reference to the fact that Wolfram called Yuri a wimp all the time.
"Conrad... What do you think Wolfram is thinking?" Yuri could always count on Conrad, and this time he needed advise more than ever.
"That's a hard question," Conrad admitted, though he did notice Wolfram's sincere feelings towards Yuri, most people did, except maybe Yuri himself. "Why don't you ask him?"
"He won't tell me," and as far as Yuri knew he had asked in every possible way.
"Try rephrasing question," Conrad suggested. "Ask casually, and before asking, answer the question yourself. You could just ask 'how are you today', or 'how do you feel about such and such' ask as if it's not too important so he won't overanalyze it too much, and motivate him to answer by sharing your own answer."
Yuri nodded, it sounded logical, and it was worth a try. "Thanks Conrad!"

Wolfram was outside training. He stopped, noticing Yuri's precense. Yuri plastered a smile on his face and asked, "How are you?" Wolfram looked at him as if he grew a second head and Yuri replied to his own question just as Conrad said he should. "I'm fine, it's a nice day."
"I would say the same," Wolfram replied, still giving Yuri odd looks, wondering what he was getting at.
"How do you feel?" Yuri continued to ask, looking for any sort of hidden hint as to what exactly Wolfram was thinking about... about anything... and thus Yuri realized he couldn't find the answer because the question was so blurry.
"How do I feel about what?" Wolfram stared at Yuri who was lost in thought. He put his sword away and walked over to the dark haired boy. "Are you feeling alright? You're acting strange," and placing a hand on his fiancé's forehead, the blond searched for a fever.
"I feel fine, physically at least," Yuri admitted.
Wolfram raised an eyebrow and urged Yuri to elaborate, "and emotionally?"
The conversation felt odd and awkward, but Yuri felt as if they were finally moving in the right direction. "Confused," honesty is always best isn't it? Yuri decided that it was.
"About what?" Wolfram asked, his mind filling the blank with too many possibilities, some more pleasant than others.
"You," there, he said it. Yuri admitted that the source of his confusion was in fact Wolfram and his somewhat contradictive behavior. The blond apparently held no grudge against the Maoh for the entire engagement situation, or at least not anymore. He couldn't possibly be happy about it, Yuri couldn't imagine it. The image of a future he once feared, but simply confused him now, appeared in Yuri's mind, a future where Wolfram truly liked him and Yuri didn't know how to handle it. The possibility of it having already become the present floated in the air.
Wolfram simply stared debating if this was good, bad or in between. "What about me confuses you?"
Yuri pushed the thoughts of Wolfram liking him away, because, truth be told, despite the calm acceptance and even the happiness that people showed towards such an union, for Yuri it was... it was... He wasn't sure, but it wasn't something he thought about often. The thought of another boy liking him just never crossed his mind, and even after being engaged to one, it still didn't. Then it hit him like a ton of bricks, he was afraid of that possibility and for that he was, as Wolfram said, a wimp. But what would he do if Wolfram did in fact like him? Yuri didn't like hurting others, and he didn't want to hurt Wolfram's feeling, especially not now that he had come to... appreciate him so much.
"Yuri!" Wolfram had become impatient.
Yuri took a deep breath, realizing that the question demanded more courage than many of his past battles. "Wolfram, how do you feel about me?"
"What?" Wolfram paled then gained a rosy color on his cheeks. "Why do you ask me that?" He tried to get away from the question without literally running away as he had done in the past. "I already told you I don't hate you, that's all you want to know, isn't it?"
Yuri was tempted to say yes, but he didn't. "No, I want to know how you feel about me, if you... well... if you like me."
Wolfram stared at the ground, his face becoming redder. "What if I say I do?" He looked up, green eyes shining with truth, and Yuri gasped.
Yuri wanted to run away, he wanted to yell to Conrad, the man who gave him his name, to come and save him. He wanted Gunter to pop out from nowhere and bring him papers to sign. He wanted Greta to appear and take him away to play with her toys. And for all that he truly felt like a wimp. "I..." Yuri did not have the answer.
"You don't want this, I know, you never did." Wolfram spoke.
Yuri kicked himself a thousand times over for not considering the possibility and with the knowledge of Wolfram's feelings, his own became a blur. At the same time Yuri felt relived and couldn't help it but to smile. He was relived that Wolfram wasn't trapped in an engagement he did not want, at least one of them could be happy with this, and for a moment Yuri considered the possibility of being happy with it himself. He smiled, feeling as if he had finally taken a step forward into understanding the mystery that is Wolfram. Yuri thought about how to answer Wolfram's question, if he wanted to receive answers he had to give answers, just as Conrad had said.
"I reject your proposal," Yuri woke up from his daze upon hearing Wolfram voice those words. Leaving a shocked Yuri standing there, Wolfram walked away; and the three maids hiding in the bushes nearly fainted.
