Chapter One
It was early morning, the sun bathing everything in a golden glow. Wolfram watched it all from a balcony in a tall tower of the Maoh's castle. "Wolfram..." King Yuri, the Maoh, and Wolfram's fiancé approached.
"You're up early today," wolfram observed. Usually Yuri did not get up until it was time for his morning training with Conrad.
"I've been thinking," Wolfram did not like the tone Yuri spoke it. It reeked of bad news.
"About what?" The blonde inquired.
Yuri took a deep breath, finding the courage to say what he needed to say. "About our engagement."
The answer took Wolfram by surprise, usually Yuri would only protest because they are both boys and speak of it as the most illogical and impossible situation. "What about it?" Wolfram encouraged his fiancé to continue, though Yuri's tone was still gloomy and a part of Wolfram screamed in silence that he did not want to hear anymore.
"Back then when I first came to this world I slapped you because I was angry. I didn't know it symbolized a marriage proposal. We never sorted that out, and we stayed engaged all this time. I guess there were other things to be done but I knew that it would have to be solved eventually." Yuri paused looking at Wolfram apologetically. "People are starting to ask me when I'm going to marry you."
Wolfram's heart nearly leaped out of his chest, but he hid it well. "What did you say?"
"I didn't say anything, I didn't know what to say, I only smiled and that was enough. I think I'm starting to understand your position that's why I..." The world moved in slow motion for Wolfram and it all came to a stop when Yuri finished what he needed to say. "I'm sorry."
Wolfram stared at Yuri, green eyes wide in surprise. A apology? Just what exactly did that mean? "Are you breaking up with me?"
Yuri shook his head and Wolfram let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. "I'm just saying, I thinking I understand why you put up with this."
Wolfram was becoming confused with the way Yuri made it sound like something terrible, yet he did not say he was breaking up. What then, were his intentions? "What do you mean?"
"When I tried to talk to you about breaking the engagement you said I shouldn't break up, so I asked you to break up with me instead but you couldn't do that. I thought there were certain rules about that and left it at that. Later I found out that engagements could be broken and I wondered why ours was still valid. Then I realized that everyone knows about this, they're happy, they have certain expectations, and the union of the Maoh with someone like you brings them a certain sense of security. I think I understand why you feel so obligated to be my fiancé, I'm starting to feel it too, the pressure of all those expectations. I don't want to let them down." Yuri felt a little better after getting all of that off his chest, but the problem was not solved yet, it was merely understood.
Wolfram looked as if a bucket of ice cold water had been suddenly dumped over his head. Yuri felt pressured to accept him as his fiancé, pressure was not the feeling Wolfram was hoping to hear about. "Wimp!" His frustration was summarized in that one word; and he considered stomping away angered, but Yuri had anticipated that and stood in the way, corning Wolfram.
"I don't want you to do this, please Wolfram just forget about what they might think and do what you want to do." Yuri was stressed; the constant questions about his wedding did not stop. Conrad was taking it well enough, as if he humored the occasion, Gunter often had emotional outbursts and everyone else was either excited or indifferent, while Cecile offered to set things up for a splendid wedding. "Don't feel like you have to be forced to be with me, I know you want to accomplish your duty and so do I," he was the Maoh after all and he had promised to do his best, "but Wolfram... you don't have to give up your life like that."
"Give up my life... you're certain this is all being forced on my by my duty, by the pressure of the people... you're so certain..." Without thinking twice about his action Wolfram raised his hand. "So this means anger in your world?" and he slapped Yuri.
Taken aback, Yuri stood aside and let Wolfram run away. "Wolfram..." Yuri had been trying to understand the other boy whom he had come to appreciate; he was trying to free him. Then why did Wolfram have such a reaction? Was it that he had already resigned to do what was expected from him without argument?
