“Aurora, honey, wake up. Time for school.” I cringed in spite of the sunlight.
“Mommy, do I have to?” I whined.
“Yes, you do. It’s your first day of school. You’re in kindergarten now.” I could sense her smile. My dad walked in my door, and sat on my bed. I was hiding under the covers. He started tickling me immediately.
“Daddy!!” I laughed, kicked and screamed. He stopped.
“How’s my Rory bear?”
“Good.” I giggled.
“Is she going to go to school and be a good girl for daddy bear?”
“Yes.” I grinned.
My mom laughed. “How is it she’ll listen to you but never me?”
“Don’t ask me.”, he shrugged.
“Let’s get you dressed, sweetheart.”, mom said.
“Bye, pumpkin.” My dad kissed my forehead. He worked at an office downtown Los Angeles. As my mom helped me pick out my clothes my nerves started to leave me shaken. I had no idea what to expect then, I was only five. My morning was a very typical one, we drove to school. It was all completely normal. My mom said her goodbyes after walking me to class. I had my separation anxiety and began to cry until a little girl named Kimberly wanted to play with me. She told me of how she didn’t have a mommy, but she had a daddy who she loved more than anything. We made a pact that day at snack time that we would be friends forever. An hour after snack time, I was called to the office. Bewildered, I walked down the hall, with the aid of the student teacher. We walked in and the teacher told me to go see the councilor. He was dressed in white and blue. Brown hair and eyes. A huge stature compared to my little one. He told me to sit down. When he began to speak he told me that I would be picked up by my nana, because my parents weren’t going to be there. When I asked why, he simply said: “Rory, your parents are in heaven, now.”
That day was the last day I ever saw my parents. I've lived with my grandparents ever since. Kimberly and I are still best friends. It’s been 11 years since then. Today is my sixteenth birthday and I’m on my way home from school. I’m celebrating tonight and I’m excited. I walked in my front door.
“Nana, I’m home!”
She came around the corner, in her best pink polka dotted party dress.
“There’s my birthday girl!” she hugged me and kissed me on the cheek.
My Grampa came from the kitchen.
“Awe c’mere you! 16! I can’t believe it.” He hugged me too. He smelled of fish and Old Spice. He must have been out fishing. Gross I know, but I love it. It’s odd. Kind of like how my nana always smells like lavender and biscuits. Funny how your senses can be such powerful things. I ran upstairs to put my things down and to call Kim. I shuffled around to find the phone. Finding it, I hit her speed dial number.
"Hey, Rory. What's up?" I loved how she already knew it was me.
"Not much. Just got in. You still coming?"
"Wouldn't miss it for anything. I'll be there in like an hour."
“Sweet action. See you then!"
"You're a dork.” she said.
"Yes, but I'm your dork."
"Psh, whatever. I'll see ya later."
"Bye." I said laughing.
Hanging up the phone, I ran back downstairs.
"Hey nana, do you need any help with anything?"
Suddenly I heard a strange voice and indistinct talking. I turned around the corner of the stair case to see a black haired mysterious woman sitting on my couch talking to my grandparents. They looked shocked. Nana noticed me.
"Aurora. Come sit. We have someone who wants to meet you."
I did as told. With apprehension I sat on the only available spot which was on the far side of the couch, opposite the woman. She outstretched a hand. I shook it not knowing what else to do.
"I'm from child and family services here in town. I understand today is your birthday and this may be a bit of shock but this is information that is vital to be known. My name is Charlene Carols." She gave me her card.
"I have been speaking with your grandparents here and they didn't know why I was here until now."
I simply nodded and looked to them for some kind of answer that I knew they couldn't give me.
"'Scuse me but could we have some privacy, please?" Directing the question towards Grampa.
"Of course." Grampa said as they scurried elsewhere.
"Now Aurora, do you have any idea as to why I'm here?"
“No maim none at all."
"Do you recall the day you parents passed away?"
"Yes I do. What does that have to do with anything?" I questioned.
"Actually it has a lot to do with all this mess."
"How?” I answered.
"They didn't tell you the truth as to who you belong to."
"What the hell?"
"Rory, I'll be honest with you right now, okay?"
I just stared at her confused.
"When you were born your natural mother was forced to put you up for adoption. Ironically, you were adopted a week later by a married couple who could not concieve a child. Your parents that you knew, David and Karen Daniels, are not your birth parents. Now your real mother wants you back. Aurora, your real last name is Iero."
"You're lying. This has to be some kind of joke. My parents loved me and they would never lie to me!" I began to choke up.
"Aurora, I understand this is very difficult for you but you have to bare with me."
"My last name is Daniels." I said coldly.
"Your mother has the right to claim you." Charlene replied.
"If she is my mom then why didn't she want to claim me when I was born?! My mother is Karen Patricia Daniels!" I screamed. I couldn't take this. I was furious and wounded. She had to be lying. I couldn't believe this.
"Aurora, please calm down. I need for you to let me talk."
"Fine. Talk. I want an explanation."
"That I already gave you. Listen. I will be back in two days. I'm going to pick you up to meet with your birth mother. All you have to do is talk with her. At this point that's all she asks for. The poor woman doesn't even know you, give a her a chance."
"Whatever." I ground out.
"I'm going to go. Aurora call if you have questions."
I sat there and didn't give her words a second thought. I watched her walk out the door. Nana came rushing to me.
"Sweetheart, I swear to you we had no clue." She wrapped her arms around me.
"Rory, Ms.Carols is right. I hate to say it but that woman has the right to claim you." He began crying.
"Grampa please, tell me it isn't true!"
"I'm sorry, honey." I broke away and ran upstairs to my room. I had to escape from this nightmare somehow. I decided to pick up the phone and see if Kim would still be coming over. I needed to talk to her now more than anything. Just as I had picked up the phone I saw nana in my doorway. I put the phone back on the receiver.
"Yes?” I said wiping my eyes.
"Kimberly is at the door. Do you want me to tell her you're not feeling well?"
"No, no. I’ll be down in a second."
She tried to give me a smile of reassurance and walked out. A few minutes later I dragged my feet down the hall and stairs. Kimberly stood waiting in the living room talking with my grandparents. Her head turned in my direction and I gave her a feeble smile.
"Okay, spill." she said hugging me.
Tears began to stream down my face.
"Hey, it can't be that bad. Let's go upstairs."
We walked upstairs and back into my room. Plopping on my bed, I began to explain the whole situation. She sat and listened in shock and when I was finished she finally spoke.
“I just can't believe this; your parents would never do this to you. I don't understand it."
"Neither do I! It makes no sense at all!"
Kimberly got quiet for a second.
"So are you going to meet this woman?"
"If she wanted to get to know me she should have kept me."
