Chapter 6
"We'll have to find out more about this virus. They might use it against us if we try to face Novarion now." Tifa could feel it trying to seal her memories, but she didn't allow it.
"I've been thinking, because this virus was used in so many people at once, it might have weakened its effect. But even then they must have some sort of device to allow them to have so many targets." Rufus had gone over many documents regarding Jenova and her past history with the ancients.
"Then we can assume they're hiding it at Shinra Headquarters since that's where this all started," though Rufus did not like it, Barret was most likely right about that.
A song that can only be described as fitting the Turks very well was heard, and Elena answered her phs.
"Elena, it's Star, they won't be able to track this call but I'll keep it quick. The water sample that was taken from the church and sent here for safe keeping cannot be reproduced. But I did find out what it had, it's a sort of combination between holy magic and an Elixir, in theory only an ancient can make it. But there is another way, is the item still secure?" Star's voice was transmitted.
"Yes, I still have it," Elena replied.
"Okay then, try putting it along with a few elixirs in a mako generator. I can guarantee anything but that should do it according to my data. I also detected some movement in Wutai, hard to say what it is. That's all I have for now."
"Understood," After the call ended Elena looked at everyone who had their eyes on her, waiting for the new information.
"So what did the lab rabbit find?" Reno asked.
Before Elena could reply, Cloud interrupted. "There's something that I've been meaning to ask all this time..." his tone caught everyone attention and they wondered what could he possibly have to say, that he kept quiet until then. "How come you call that Turk lab rabbit?"
Some of his companions blinked twice while others simply stared at Cloud. "I thought you were going to say something important!" Cid sounded a bit disappointed.
"Oh well... It's just that she's always in the information lab, or secret bases like that and hardly ever goes out." Reno gave it some thought and elaborated. "I can't call her guinea pig, it doesn't fit because she's not getting experimented on. If I sat lab rat, I don't think she would like that, she would probably hit me on the head or something. I guess I could call her lab mouse, it sounds nicer, but i think rabbit fits best. Doesn't she look like a rabbit to you?"
"What is the world does that have to do with savin' the planet?!" Barret yelled loud enough for all of Cosmo Canyon to hear, and for his echo to return.
"I don't know, he asked!" Reno pointed at Cloud. "Besides, aren't we all buddies now and all about sharing information and not keeping secrets?" There was a certain amusing irony for Reno in those words, since he knew that they were keeping a very important detail secret. It was only natural; Shinra had to have a second plan, just in case.
Noting Reno's expression, which was not perceived as suspicious by anyone else, silently Rude willed his partner to keep quiet about the topic before he said too much. Though Elena was often accused of being the one who gave away all the secrets; before she joined the Turks, the title had belonged to Reno.
Elena then noticed Rude's disapproving look, at the way she let the Jenova box sit so casually on the ground next to her. Trying not too look distrusting, she picked it up and placed it on her lap, keeping one hand on it, and holding a long stick with roasted marshmallows in the other. Bribery with marshmallows, it was the only way to get Rufus Shinra to camp out, it was something that Tseng had told her some time ago.
"Get that spiky head of yours thinkin' 'bout something else that's not people's nicknames!" Barret scolded Cloud. As if on cue, Cloud ate a marshmallow. "Or marshmallows!" Barret added. Everyone laughed at his antics, though he was actually trying to make everything more serious, which made it funnier.
"Getting back into the main topic," Red XIII effectively got the conversation flowing in the right direction again. "Did you receive any news from the person known as lab rabbit?" The way Red XIII spoke the name as if it were a common one, amazed some.
"Yes, there was something in the back up databases. We'll need to some Elixirs and other ingredients." Elena searched for a way to communicate the message in a way that wasn't suspicious but only those who needed to know found out. "Also something is happening at Wutai."
"It involves the materia?" Rufus asked, much to Elena's surprise. It seemed that he did not care if that piece of information was revealed as long as the secret plan, should the battle fail, was not revealed. He knew loud wouldn't like it, but it might become a necessity.
"Yes, elixirs, and the materia," Elena confirmed it.
"Then we'll have to dive ourselves in a few groups again," Rufus concluded. "There are a few things I want to investigate from here, Rude is well informed about the old Jenova documents, maybe we'll be able to remember something useful with Red XIII's notes."
"Alright, then Rufus, Rude and Red XIII will stay here at Cosmo Canyon," leader had always been Cloud's role, and even if he didn't complain if someone else started forming team, he usually stepped in and just had to say something. "Barret, take Marlene and Denzel to Rocket Town, if the observatory catches Novarion's attention no one will be safe here." Though cloud was seemingly forming team quickly, he did put some thought into it. Barret did not have the virus so he could keep a clear head if anything came up. Cid would be needed to provide transportation on the airship since no one else in the group could pilot it as well as him. "Where is the materia you need?"
"Hidden underwater," Rufus replied. It didn't matter how much they knew as long as things got done, and it would be for their mutual benefit even if some, especially Barret might not be too comfortable with the methods. "We'll need to use a submarine from Junon, it's also a safe place to keep Jenova remaining cells."
"Then I will transport Jenova there..." Cloud offered, though not only Rufus and the Turks, but Tifa also disapproved.
"Is that alright, Cloud? I'll go with them instead." Tifa was not too fond of the idea of Cloud holding on to a box containing the last few cells of Jenova.
"Why don't you both just head on to Wutai? We just need a submarine from Junon right? We'll sneak one off, get the cargo and come back on Shera. It shouldn't be too hard to do that," Cloud gave Cid's idea some thought.
"Fine, Tifa and I will go to Wutai. Cid and Elena can travel to Junon, and one more person, in case there's a battle it's best if there are at lest three in the group; that way it won't be big enough to be suspicious, but there will be enough people to help the fight be easier." Three was the magic number in Cloud's head. That meant he was also planning to take someone along to Wutai, even if he might not be too fond of the idea.
"I'll go to Junon, and return soon to help with the research," Rude offered, and everyone agreed.
"Right, that leaves Tifa, Reno and I heading to Wutai," Cloud announced, Tifa nodded and Reno gave a thumbs up.

"Are you sure this works?" Barret looked at the vehicle suspiciously. It was strange in his opinion, like a combination between a buggy and a hover craft.
"Of course it works, I designed it!" Cid was proud of his work, he always had been. "Shera helped too." By that he meant to say that Shera did most of the work, while he threw out ideas and drank tea, before eventually joining in, not wanting to miss out when he noticed Shera was almost done. "With this you should be able to cross river, quick sand and even the water of the ocean, you should have no problems getting to Rocket Town in this."
"I have a question," Reno made a pause, as if waiting for everyone to pay attention to him. It was something someone would do before saying something important that should not be missed. "What do you call this thing?"
Marlene and Denzel laughed, this was the second time something similar happened. "Stop doin' that!" Barret was starting to get annoyed. "Stop gettin' my hopes up as if you're gonna say something important, then ask about names!"
"Hey, that is something important!" Cid defended his creation. "To answer Reno's very important question, it is called the Water Bug, because it 's similar to a buggy but it can also travel on water."
"Water Bug?" Reno repeated in disbelief. "That's so lame! You have to name is something cooler!"
Barret was at the end of his rope, while Marlene and Denzel were further amused. "That's it, no more talk about names! Marlene, Denzel, get in, I'm drivin' this thing!" Barret drove off with some difficulty, until he got used to the controls and speed away much smoothly.
"Cid," Cloud's tone had the makings of what could be classified as another unnecessary question, yet one that would be asked either way. "How come you kept the Water Bug here at Cosmo Canyon?" Reno ha a point, the name wasn't all that great.
"I didn't have enough room back home." Cid's answer was logical and simple, but it served the to take care of everyone' curiosity about the vehicle, at least for now, so they could focus on more important things.
"Cid, Elena and Rude, be careful at Junon. We'll meet back the Cosmo Canyon after each of us is ready." Cloud paused and looked at Cid.
The pilot tried to reassure him. "You can't be everywhere at once, sometimes you have to leave things for someone else to handle." By that he meant that he would make sure to keep an eye on the Turks. They might have worked together before, but because of their past history, trust would take longer than one adventure to be build.
Cid, presented Cloud with another Water Bug which his team would use to get to Wutai. Shinra's latest underground transportation system, which Rufus had used to get to Cosmo Canyon, did not reach as far as Wutai so they would need Cid's invention. The four teams went their separate ways.

It was relatively easy for Barret, Marlene and Denzel to reach Rocket Town. The place kept its name even after the rocket was long gone. "We're here," Barret announced more to reassure himself than anything else. He wasn't too fond of driving; he could deal with cars but did not like complicated machines like that Water Bug.
"It looks like everything is alright here," Denzel observed the tranquil atmosphere. It was as if people had carried on with their lives like nothing ever happened.
"They don't know..." Barret assumed.
"Let's go see aunt Shera," Marlene headed towards Shera's house, followed by Denzel and Barret.
They knocked on the door and Shera let them in. As always she welcomed the visitors and prepared tea for them, though Barret said he couldn't stay. "I have to go back and meet up with the other." He knew the children were quite mature for their ages because of how they had been raised. "You two tell Shera about what we talked about after leaving Midgar, and at Cosmo Canyon." It was best not to hide what they would find out about anyway, explaining the situation would keep confusion away, so they were told about what was happening at Midgar, and how it could affect the planet.
After Barret left Marlene and Denzel had a long talk with Shera. She remembered Tseng, and she remembered her husband Cid, she was worried and glad to receive the news that he was alright; because no one in Rocket Town remembered the captain.
