Geostigma

The day had gone perfect for the materia stealing ninja and right now all she wanted to do was take a nice shower and relax. She should have known it was too good to be true. Yuffie, Vincent, Barret, Cid, Shera and Red XIII were currently visiting Cloud and Tifa. They had somehow made room for everyone and the day had been a blast. Why couldn't she still be in the cheerful mood she was moment ago?

A knock on the bathroom door was heard. "Yuffie? Are you almost done?" Tifa asked from outside.

As lost in thought as Yuffie was with her mind going a mile a minute with the possibilities the ninja heard her clearly. "Almost!" She said in the most cheerful voice she could manage.

"Ok, I don't mean to rush you or anything but Cloud really needs to use the bathroom" Tifa said.

Normally Yuffie would have been amused by the image of Cloud Strife doing a funny little dance in his chair waiting for the bathroom to be free. But right now she was not in the mood to smile. Yuffie bit her lip and took another look at the back of her left leg. There was a small spot there. It was a little circle about in inch wide. It looked like geostigma.

She shook her heard and tried to be reasonable. The shower was open letting cool water rain upon her but it didn't help. She tried to figure it out. It couldn't be geostigma. That was long gone. Maybe it was some kind of rash but it didn't look like a rash and it wasn't a scratch either. It was something else, something that worried her.

Trying to keep her mind from wondering into the unpleasant possibilities Yuffie fished her shower quickly. She stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around herself drying her body as fast as possible. Her bag with extra clothes was hanging from the towel rack. She reached for it once she was dry and searched for something to wear. She decided to wear something simple. It was late and she wasn't planning to go anywhere. She decided on a tshirt, long loose pants and comfortable sneakers. When it was time to go to sleep she would just take off the sneakers and be ready to go into dream land.

Before getting dressed Yuffie took one last look at that spot in the back of her leg. It looked so much like geostigma it was freaking her out. She decided not to look at it anymore and reached for a first aid kit. She took a bandage and wrapped it around the area of her leg making sure it as on tight but not too tight. She closed the first aid kit and put it back where it was hoping no one would notice the missing bandage and ask about it. Then she got dressed, picked up her things and left the bathroom.

A few steps away from the bathroom she found Cloud. He had a worried look in his face for lack of better word. His legs were closed together as he moved uncomfortably towards the bathroom. "Sorry to keep you waiting" Yuffie said.

"It's ok" Cloud said rushing into the bathroom as soon as the ninja was out.

Yuffie made her way to the living room and sat down on the couch. Cid was telling a joke or a story or something while he and Barret played cards. Yuffie wasn't paying attention. Shera was talking to Tifa. Yuffie didn't know of what, her mind was elsewhere. Marlene and Denzel were playing a board game. Yuffie had seen the game before but suddenly came to a blank when she tried to remember the rules. Red XII was taking a nap and Vincent was standing quietly in a corner.

Suddenly she felt as if she didn't want to risk ruining their fun if they somehow noticed what was going on. She would give it a week to heal and if it didn't get any better by then she would start to worry. With the silence of a ninja Yuffie got up and stuck away. She went upstairs to the room she was supposed to share with Tifa since there weren't enough rooms for everyone to have their own. She felt as if she was being fallowed. "How may I help you Vincent?" She asked without turning. She knew it was him.

"Perhaps you are the one who needs helps. It is already too late for me" Vincent said.

Yuffie turned to face him and gave him her best faked smile. "I'm fine."

"Something is worrying you and you're tying to hide it" Vincent correctly concluded.

"No, I'm fine, really" Yuffie insisted. "I'm going back downstairs." She started to walk but he stood blocking the door.

"Pretending everything is alright will not help. Life is meant to be faced not to run away from it" Vincent said.

Yuffie looked away. "It's none of your business."

There was a pause. "Maybe not and maybe it is" Vincent finally said. "Tell me."

Yuffie sat down on the bed. She rolled up her pant until the bandage on her leg was visible. She then removed the bandage letting Vincent see the geostigma looking thing on her leg.

"Geostigma?" Vincent asked unsure. His expression was hard to read but his tone showed the slightest hint of surprise and hidden concern.

"Not necessarily, it could be something else" Yuffie said.

"Could be" Vincent agreed. For a moment Yuffie felt relieved but it didn't last long. "Either way it's not normal."

Yuffie nodded in acknowledgement. "I know but it can wait. I'll give it a week and if it doesn't heal by then I'll go to a doctor."

"You're going to a doctor right away" Vincent said. Yuffie looked at him, even if his expression was as hard to read as ever she could see the determination in his eyes.

"Now?" She asked.

"Yes" Vincent answered.

"No, not now." Yuffie tied the bandage back on her leg and rolled down her pant. "I don't want to worry anyone. Please Vincent, don't tell, please."

Vincent decided to agree with her but only partially. "I won't tell anyone but you're still going to the doctor."

"It's too late, I'll go tomorrow" Yuffie said.

"The hospital is open all night" Vincent pointed out. "Get up, we're leaving now."

"We? You're going with me?" Yuffie asked.

"Yes" Vincent answered.

"I'm not a little girl you know. I can go to the doctor by my self. Either way I think you're overreacting. It's best to stick to my original plan to give whatever that thing is some time to heal before jumping to conclusions" Yuffie argued.

"I'm not jumping to conclusions" Vincent said. "I will let the doctor be the one to conclude what that is and what needs to be done about it."

Yuffie sighed in defeat. Vincent wasn't going to leave her alone. "Fine but don't tell the others. I'm not going to ruin their fun. That's just going make me feel bad and they say people don't heal as well when they're in a bad mood."

"Don't give me that look as if you regret telling me. You know it was the right thing to do" Vincent said.

Yuffie stood from the bed and they started walking downstairs. "I still think you're making a big deal out of nothing." She certainly hoped it really was nothing to worry about. "I feel fine, my leg doesn't hurt and I can walk and jump like a true ninja."

"Let's try to keep it that way" Vincent said. "I don't want anyone else to get hurt."

As they headed for the door Tifa noticed they were leaving. "Where are you two going?"

At that moment all their friends turned their heads in their direction. "We're just going out for a little walk" Yuffie said. Vincent nodded quietly.

"Have fun" Tifa said smiling.

"We will" Yuffie said sounding as cheerful as she could. Tifa noticed something was off in Yuffie's expression but didn't think there was something wrong. She knew the ninja liked Vincent. Maybe she was just a little nervous. It probably wasn't anything to worry about otherwise she would have said something.

Yuffie and Vincent left walking quietly to the nearest hospital. Yuffie's expression turned sadder with each step she took as she thought of the possible consequences if whatever she had didn't have a cure. Geostigma wasn't the only possibility there were other illnesses out there that could also be a problem. She pushed the thoughts away but they wouldn't stop echoing in her mind. Being young, strong and agile didn't mean being immune to illnesses as people used to think before the geostigma incident.

She was so distracted by her own less than pleasant thoughts that she missed a turn. "Yuffie." She looked at Vincent who was indicating the right way to the hospital. She could see the tall building from where she stood. They were almost there.

Vincent took her hand as they walked closer to the hospital. He stayed with her while the doctor asked questions and took notes on a clipboard. The standard procedure was followed to measure her heat beats and blood pressure. Then there was an examination of the affected area on her leg. He even went with her to the laboratory area to get a blood sample taken.

There they found Reno. "If it isn't the ninja and the vampire. What are you here for?"

"None of your business" Yuffie said. She didn't like the doctor's comments or his expression as if he had bad news but didn't want to say anything until he was certain.

"Don't bite my head off, yo! I'm here for a yearly medical test for Shinra. I have to get a blood sample taken. I hate needles" Reno said.

Yuffie decided not to ask why he didn't get it done sometime during the day instead. She noticed Reno looked uncomfortable and decided to show some sympathy. "I'm getting a blood sample taken too." Taking into consideration the possibility that Reno might comment about seeing her there when she was supposed to be taking a nice little walk with Vincent she added "I'm feeling great. I just want to know what my blood type is."

"You mean you don't know yet?" Reno asked.

"I'm about to find out" Yuffie said. Vincent was as usual quiet but he continued to hold Yuffie's hand which Reno noticed.

The red haired Turks wanted to tell a joke along the lines of Yuffie having her blood sample taken by her vampire friend or something like that but he decided to keep quiet as to not upset the ex-Turks. Sure Vincent looked like a vampire but he wasn't a vampire and it must get pretty annoying being reminded he looks like one every now and then. Soon a nurse called Reno's name and the redhead looked around frantically. "Do you two want to go first?"

"You're scared to go in without Rude aren't you?" Yuffie asked. She smiled in amusement. She wasn't in the mood to smile but this was just too funny.

"I didn't say that" Reno said although she knew that's exactly what he was thinking. 'How long does it take Rude to go get some coffee and come back?' Reno thought.

"Ok, I'll help you buy some time" Yuffie said. The faster she got the tests over with the better. Whatever the truth may be she had to know.

"They're going in first" Reno told the nurse who nodded and received the paper from the doctor that Yuffie handed her.

As Yuffie sat down and extended her arm for the blood sample to be taken Vincent continued to hold her other hand. Suddenly she felt calm and safe. Although she knew that the results of the medical tests could be bad she wasn't worried anymore. Whatever happened, Vincent was with her.
