Gate Key

A week after the fight with Lavos was over and things were finally getting back to normal Lucca looked at a few items related to her adventure. Items they bought in other times, her wonder shot and such things. Her room was a big mess and after searching to no avail for a specific item she had decided to take a break and try to remember the last time she saw said item but instead ended up staring at those other items. "Where are you Gate Key?" She asked out loud to no one in particular as she was the only one in the room.

She had asked Crono about it and they searched his house in case she had dropped it there. She also told Marle and searching the entire Guardia Castle was an exhausting experience she won't soon forget, no matter how hard she tried. When searching Marle's room they found things the princess had long forgotten she had and each object came with a childhood story that Marle happily told.

They had searched every inch of the town and still no Gate Key. Why did Lucca searched in such illogical places if she knew very well it was unlikely to the point of being almost impossible that she had dropped the Gate Key there. How ever her adventure in time had taught her never to label anything as impossible.

With a sigh Lucca came to the conclusion she had been denying to herself since she realized she did not have the Gate Key. She dropped it in another time. Or she could have dropped it on the fight with Lavos and it was destroyed. For the world's own good it had better been destroyed. She didn't want to think about what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands. The thought of someone other then her friends and her self messing with time was most unpleasant.

Great, now she had something to worry about. Why couldn't she just be like Marle? She remembered what she had said when Lucca informed her of her missing Gate Key. "It's ok, you can make another one" Marle said totally missing the point. It's not that she couldn't make another one, which she could; it's that the original one may cause a few unwanted effects in time if someone got a hold of it and happened to come across a gate.

Crono gave it more concern than Marle but not as much as Lucca. He said that it was very unlikely that anyone would find it and use it on a gate, besides weren't the gates gone now that Lavos was gone? His first point was proven useless by the fact that it is also very unlikely for a man to turn into a Frog, or a girl to magically set things on fire, or an egg to freeze time or people to time travel. His second argument however proved to be more interesting. Lucca had already made another Gate Key and tested it on the gate in the fair grounds, being this the first time she hoped her invention did not work, it did.

So another unanswered question was added to the list. If Lavos made the gates possible why was there still a gate there if Lavos was gone? The most logical answer would be because they defeated Lavos in the future and he still existed in this time. Would that mean the gates to the past where Lavos still lives work but the gates to the future don't? The more she thought about it the more confusing it became. She wanted and was used to having everything figured out but this time she couldn't and knowing that frustrated her to no end or rather annoyed her, or maybe it was both.

Looking at the bright side of this situation if any changes in time where to be made she would notice right? Unless of course such changes wiped her out from existence, was that possible? What would happen then? She tried to remain calm thinking that it was very unlikely that she, Crono and Marle would all be erased from history at the same time and that who ever was left would somehow save the others and together they would get rid of who ever or whatever caused the mess in the first place in the case that such a thing happened.

Magus was, as he has been doing for the past week, searching for Schala. This would be so much easier if he would stop getting those strange dreams and visions. That's what he called them from lack of better name but they where in fact memories of things that never happened. Every time he was exposed to the gates he got them. As if every alternate future past and present wanted to get into his head. Whatever it was he wasn't going to let it stop him from continuing his search.

So what if Schala wasn't in the Dark Ages, she has to be somewhere other wise Marle's existence was impossible if it was true that Schala was her ancestor. If so then she must have had descendants in some point as logic dictates descendants cannot exist without ancestors. If all of this was true the more reason he should find her, after all he didn't want his dear sister to marry someone not worthy of her. He didn't care who would be erased from history with his finding her but he had to find her. His sister mattered more to him than the world itself and all the people in it.

For a moment he wondered what Schala would say to such thoughts but luckily she wasn't a mind reader, well actually she was but he knew how to keep his mind out of reach and he was very thankful for that.

After sitting in her room for a few more minutes Lucca finally came down stairs to find Crono and Marle waiting for her there. Why didn't they come up to her room? Maybe because they thought she was still upset about the lost Gate Key and when Lucca get upset you should keep everything flammable including human skin away from her. Nah, they wouldn't think that would they?

Maybe they just wanted to give her the space she indirectly requested to cope with the fact that her Gate Key was gone and there was nothing they could do about it. The afternoon progressed uneventfully. Marle suggested a picnic in Fiona's forest and out of lack of better thing to do they went on the picnic. It was another beautiful day and after spending the afternoon with Crono and Marle in the forest Lucca was starting to think that worrying over her Gate Key was silly. A simple Gate Key couldn't do a lot of damage. Not more than Lavos anyway and they fixed that, sort of... it's not like they knew what the future was like but it must be good right? Of course it was, it had to be.

Another time, another unsuccessful search. He wasn't taking time to look in very part of the world or every continent or even every store and inn in the town he was in and there weren't many. He just didn't feel like his sister was here. Something told him that when he got to the time where she was in he would know it somehow. It was as if something was guiding him and he didn't know what it was but he trusted it, almost like he would trust Schala. That feeling was strange and even creepy sometimes not that Magus would admit it. Leaving the town and heading back to the gate that brought him to that time he used the Gate Key to open it and jumped in.

Magus was now back in the Dark Ages, he always came here to rest before continuing his search for Schala, he could go to the Middle Ages but somehow he didn't feel like being around then Mystics right now. Following that same strange feeling that appeared to guide him he took a walk along the snowy fields of the lands surrounding the village. The ice was starting to melt away but it was still pretty cold especially after sun set, he didn't really care anyway, he had been in worse temperatures before. Up ahead he noticed a red light. He stared at it as if the light was calling him, almost unconsciously he began to run towards the light and another vision took over his mind.

There was a purple haired woman and there was fire. He could still see the red light; he reached for it with the Gate Key. The purple haired woman pointed at him, there was a flame in her hand. The red light became brighter, taking him to another time. The woman shot the fire ball at him and then the scene changed. It was an endless void of shades of red. There was the purple haired woman again, why did she look so familiar? She didn't have the angry look she had in the previous vision, now she was not surrounded by fire, she was smiling at him and then the red lights became brighter before everything went black.

"Janus... Janus... Brother please wake up" Magus slowly opened his eyes to find non other than the one he had been searching for, his sister Schala. A million questions filled his mind about the red gate and the strange visions but none of it mattered now all that truly mattered was that he found his sister.

"Schala..." He said her name almost afraid that it was a dream from which he would be cruelly awakened.

"It's ok Janus, I'm here now" She hugged him like she had when he was a little boy and he knew she was real, he found her, or she found him. It didn't truly matter who found who as long as they where reunited.

Schala and Magus, or Janus as she preferred to call him spent the next few hours at her house in a time between the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages that could not be reached by ordinary blue gates talking about everything that had happened in their lives. She had figured out the Prophet's true identity when he tried to save her from Lavos, it was if she could sense Janus's presence in him. It looked as if they could finally live a peaceful and happy life but the peace would not last as a new danger would threaten their world, it had already started.

It had been a week since Magus's arrival at the era where Schala now lived. He lay awake in his room; he hasn't slept in, in years. Even if he was awake it was nice to just stay in bed and do nothing for once, he was finally feeling relaxed after such a long time of constant stress and pressure, as if he was becoming Janus once again. He stared up at the ceiling smiling to him self until he saw the familiar red light in the ceiling. He did not have time to move when Lucca fell on him from the red gate that had just appeared.

"What just happened? Where did I land?" Lucca said to no one in particular she adjusted her glasses and helmet and Magus's face came in to focus.

They blinked letting the currents facts sink in and just as Lucca's body was about to regain movement Schala came letting herself in since the door was opened. "Janus breakfast is... Oh, dear... I don't mind if you invite friends over but do close the door, alright?" She smiled as if she knew something that they didn't and closed the door.

Magus looked at the purple haired girl on top of him who was slightly blushing and clearly trying to hide it then at the closed door before yelling "It's not what it looks like!"

Lucca quickly got herself off Magus and stood next to the bed feeling rather uncomfortable. There was a moment of silence until Magus finally spoke. "What are you doing here?" He was direct, straight to the point, no need to decorate his words.

"I was cleaning my room since I made a pretty big mess desperately searching for... for something I lost and found a red gate at the bottom of my closet which brought me here, what is this place anyway and was that Schala?" She asked hoping he wouldn't ask what she lost since he would most likely have a disapproving comment about it, not that she cared.

"Obviously if you where looking for it you lost it" So much for him not noticing what she was trying to hide. "This time is between the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages and yes that was Schala. Now what is it that you lost four eyes? I have a feeling its bad news" He said glaring.

She glared back. "Did you take an extra gate key by any chance?" It was unlikely but she had to ask.

"I only have the one you gave me" He said picking it up from a small table next to the bed. He paused and looked at her. "You didn't loose one of these did you?" She nodded. "What? Do you know how much damage can be cause by manipulating history?" He asked growing angrier by the second as he thought of all the possibilities of what could happen if the gate key fell into the hands of someone like for example Ozzie or worse. He secretly feared that history would be altered and he would lose Schala again but he would never admit such worries even if they were obvious.

"Of course I know!" Lucca said in frustration. She certainly didn't want to cause any problems in history, how could she loose that gate key?

Magus turned and walked out of the room. "I guess we'll have to go find it" He said heading to the kitchen where Schala had breakfast ready.

"We?" Lucca said following him. "You're coming too?" She asked.

"You lost it once, I'm just going to make sure you don't loose it again" He didn't turn around or look at her yet somehow felt her glare.

"May I remind you that I made the gate key and I gave you the one you have" The memories of that night at the Millennial Fair came back to her; it was the night of the Moon Light Festival when everyone was to return to their own eras.

/Flashback/

"There you are!" Lucca said approaching Magus who was away from everyone in a dark corner near the Telepod. "Why don't you join us in the celebration" She asked smiling.

"Why would you care?" He glared at her as he always glared at everyone.

After defeating Lavos, Lucca was in too much of a good mood to let his attitude change it. "I was just wondering. Aren't you bored here all by yourself?"

"No, now why don't you go back to your little friends and celebrations? Lavos is gone and you saved your mother so your mission is complete" He retreated further into the dark corner.

"How did you know about my mother?" She asked in surprised, she thought that the only one who knew was Robo since he was the only one awake at the time and being busy with all the battles she hasn't had time to tell anyone else about it since she didn't want to wake them up then.

"I was awake" He stated simply, sending a clear message that he didn't want to continue with the conversation which Lucca chose to ignore.

She was about to say something when the meaning of his words sunk in. Lavos was defeated and her mother could walk again so her mission was complete but his mission wasn't. Suddenly she felt like she wasn't complete either. Schala had helped them and she was still missing. She was about to say she was sorry for celebrating and inviting him to celebrate when he must be worried about his sister's life but he probably wouldn't appreciate what he would call useless pity and would must likely be angry because of it. So instead she decided to do something that would result more useful to him.

During the times when she wasn't traveling with everyone instead of staying at the End of Time she choose to stay in her house she could work on a few projects. One of the things she made was a new gate key. Right now Marle had one and she had the other. She took the new gate key in her hands and looked at it then at Magus. She didn't know why but she wanted to help him find Schala, he would never allow her to come along and actually help so she would provide him with a very useful tool instead. For a moment she debated if or not he could be trusted and finally decided to give him a chance. "Take this just in case you need to time travel, it might help you find her" She held the gate key to him; he looked at her and the gate key and finally decided to take it. "You're welcome" She said with a smile even if he hasn't said anything.

/End of Flashback/

When the time came for everyone to leave Marle said she couldn't do it so she gave the first gate key to Lucca. Between the doubt about whether or not she had done the right thing by giving Magus a gate key and saying good bye to her friends she didn't pay attention to where she put the gate key. That was the last time she saw it and thought she place it in her pocket and didn't think much of it until much later when she discovered it was missing. She could have lost it any time from that moment on and due to its use it could be anywhere or any when.

She was still lost in thought when Schala invited her to have breakfast and she automatically thanked her and sat down without even thinking about what she was doing. It wasn't until Schala asked her if there was something she wanted to say that she came out of her thoughts and started asking her questions about what had happened since she last saw her including how she managed to escape from the Ocean Palace which Schala gladly answered. Pouring some extra syrup into her pancakes Lucca listened to Schala's narrations about escaping from the Ocean Palace by using a red gate. Even Schala wasn't sure how she was able to open it but it was that gate that brought her here.

After explaining the current situation to her they had agreed to leave immediately to recover the lost gate key before history was affected. Magus had asked Schala to come to which she replied. "You two need to do this, I am needed here" He wasn't sure what she meant but she sounded like she knew what she was talking about. Of course he trying to ask about it but Schala simply asked them to trust her, she knew something they didn't but why would she tell him? Magus knew that it wasn't Lucca's presence keeping her from telling him, it was something else, something she knew, but what?

It was months later for Lucca and Magus and only a day later for Schala that they returned to Schala's house. Magus had learned a spell to time travel by creating a red gate. Schala smiled as she watched them walk back to her house by the window. If anyone was a prophet it was her. She knew very well of what these travels will lead to. Those two were too stubborn for normal matchmaking so she had to trick them but it was for their own good.

She had traveled to Lucca's house and taken the gate key moving by the way of the red gates. She knew of the chain of evens this would cause and she was a very good actress. Soon enough Janus's prophet ability was developed further and he knew of what his sister did. Yet he conveniently took his time telling Lucca. Now they were heading back after recovering the gate key that Schala left for them to find. She kept a watchful eye on the item. Janus had seen her hiding in the shadows. Finally their adventure was over and he had to admit it was worth it.

It had also been only a day for Lucca's friends since they returned to her time using a red gate. They wondered how Lucca and Magus had somehow become so close in such a short time but they knew time travel had its ways. Yet one question always remained. Was this the only reason that Schala sent them on their adventure or was there more to it. Maybe she did this for the Entity because Magus had to learn that spell. Maybe he was supposed to know. Maybe another adventure would come soon. They didn't know but for now they would live the present time.
