A Normal Human Day
0 ReviewsTifa's day was fairly average, get up, work, go shopping, meet boyfriend... unfortunately for her, even the most unexpected things can happen on any ordinary day.
Truthfully, being with Reno had rather surprised her, since when they first met, she couldn't stand the guy, but it was a wonder what time could do, and healing... The past had to stay the past, after all. She realized this, having seen what it could do to other people. Honestly, she hadn't known it had warped her as well so much... she had Reno to thank for that, too. He wasn't so bad when you get to know him, and underneath, he was a very surprising person.
She dressed quickly and went downstairs, passing by the children's rooms. That was another thing... Barret had come to take Marlene and Denzel somewhere, and it had made the bar seem even more empty than usual. To her, it could be full of patrons and still feel empty. Maybe that was why she clung to the relationship with Reno, any type of offering of affection made her feel less empty, more like a normal human being.
The girl sighed and moved to set out the chairs and set the stools down from off the bar. It didn't take her long, she had it down to an art, and after about five minutes went behind the bar to start up the stove. People would be coming in soon, wanting breakfast of the famous cooking of Tifa, and the stupid thing took too long to heat. While that was being done, and a pot full of water for tea was set on the stove, she walked over to the door and unlocked it, opening it wide and letting the fresh breeze inside, stirring a few stray napkins on the floor. It wasn't raining, for once, and she noticed a few breaks in the cloud cover. Maybe today would be one of those rare sunny days in Edge. Midgar might be gone, but the weather still stayed the same, and it felt... familiar to her. One of those things that she could hold on to for comfort in this scary new world. It must be what growing up was like, she thought. Not that she had gotten a chance to do that much, it seemed like she went straight from young girl to hardened warrior, all those years ago... she liked watching the kids see things with wonder, it made her feel like the world wasn't so bad.
She sighed again, and wiped a tear away before retreating back into the bar. She decided to close early today, she was running low on some things and had to go shopping. That and she didn't think she could handle a full day today. It would be great getting away from the place... for once.
The day had been rather busy, she mused, as she locked the door behind her. Reno still hadn't shown up, but probably would later that night. When he said he'd drop by, he always did, or called if duties led him elsewhere. He was working hard to clean up the mess Kadaj had left and rebuild Shin-Ra, she knew, but tried not to talk about it with him. Shin-Ra would easy turn into their first full blown argument if she let it, but mostly she tried to ignore it. It was hard to tell what Reno was thinking sometimes, a bit like Cloud in that respect, but when asked he didn't hesitate to tell. It was a nice change from Cloud and Vincent, who didn't say a word, and Cid and Barret, who always made sure you knew what they were thinking, appropriate or not.
Tifa stifled a yawn, holding her hand over her mouth, as she walked down the street to the market, big canvas bag in hand. It was good to carry things in, and saved on plastic and paper bags, and it didn't break either and leave jars smashed on the ground. Just as she turned the corner to end up on Market Lane, she saw a flash of bright red hair. That was funny... could that be Reno? After Meteor, there weren't a lot of people with that color of hair around, a lot of them having perished in Midgar. She caught another glance, and saw that it was indeed Reno, heading the opposite way of the bar. She frowned, a little confused. Where was he going? Didn't he see her? Maybe she could catch up to him and say hi, and maybe he'd help her with shopping... that would be nice.
Tucking the bag under her arm, she jogged across the street and down the alley Reno had gone, hoping to see him. He wasn't there, but she heard footsteps coming from one of the offshoot alleys, and she headed towards it. Turning the corner, she saw him again, walking quickly to the other side. Now she was intrigued, where was he going? Was he following someone? Getting information? She had to know, so she started hiding a little, sneaking after him through the alleys and off streets...
Fifteen minutes later, she had lost him and huffed in frustration, putting hands on her hips and looking around the mostly deserted section of town. This was where the warehouses were, and most of the people down here were delivery boys and stock girls. Not many of them, either. She wandered around, getting to know the streets, hoping to find Reno's trail again, when she heard a high pitched scream coming from behind a small dumpster in a nearby dead end.
Tifa ran towards the sound, her protective instincts kicking in, and rushed around the corner, not noticing the blood making a small river towards a sewage grate... and came face to face with Reno, who was biting the neck of a young woman, and had blood dripping down her body. Tifa blinked, and backed up a little. Reno saw her and lifted his head, blood still dripping from his mouth... and let the woman go. The poor girl sagged against the wall, looking at the two of them, and touched her hand to her neck.
"Tifa..." The redhead quickly wiped away the blood, and just at that moment a small light came off the woman's neck, and the blood was gone. She screamed again and ran away, stumbling over her own feet in the effort.
It was then that Tifa realized her boyfriend was a vampire. She whirled around, and ran. Not because she was afraid...
She was hurt.
