He surges to meet her, gasping, and it is not love, but it is hot, tense, unbearable pleasure, and sometimes she thinks it is better than love could ever be.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, this is how the mighty fall.
It is bleak and blazing, beautiful and hideous, and she can't look away, but somehow she does. She won't be held in thrall by the romantic anymore; she won't waste her life in the pretentious drama that she read about in the stories as a little girl. It's too much shit, and this is the only life she has got, and she has done that all before, anyway. She doesn't want to waste her life. (Never mind that she is just by not-looking.) It's not-falling, and she is sort of...apathetically content. (And that is how she is wasting it.) Apathetically content, and that is such a stupid feeling for a ninja. It's a stupid feeling for someone who can die at any moment of any day, for someone whose entire life could span five genjutsu seconds that are all in ones head after all.
Tsukiyomi.
But the Uchiha are all dead now, anyway. She killed one of them herself and it was the hardest thing she has ever done, but she won't be held in thrall by the romantic anymore. She got strong (she is the strongest) and killed her dream - SASUKE, she lied calmly, SASUKE i hate you, but he couldn't hear her anymore because he was dead and who was she lying to? - because it was a lie that was going to drag her down. This is how the mighty fall. It was such a lie, and even though ninja live off of untruths and illusions, she has never been a particularly rational ninja in the first place.
So she keeps her hair shorn and dyes it black to blend better. She merges with Inner Sakura, and if the mirror on the wall reminds her a bit of Anko when she smilesmirks, that's okay, because SHE IS ONE OF THE MIGHTY now - a medic-nin who surpasses Tsunade.
When she goes to her apartment after a seventy-two hour shift at the hospital and finds her old (failure of a) sensei there, she smilesmirks - like Anko, like she has seen broken ouroboros and insanity that marked a flawless neck because snakes slithered into her life and poisoned it loudly. Kakashi turns to her wordlessly, pleading, and the smilesmirk never leaves her face as she undoes his pants and rides his cock while she traces a kunai in swirling designs up and down his spine.
She doesn't heal the cuts once she is finished with him.
So perhaps she is wasting her life, but SHE IS ONE OF THE MIGHTY and she swears she won't fall like all the other titans have. She has given up too much to fall now, and she doesn't realize it but she is still clinging to the romantic (as if life was fair or gave a god-fuck about sacrifice.)
She saves a thousand lives and destroys a thousand more, and she knows that even though Naruto and his dream were killed, she will steal it from him, and that's how it always goes, isn't it? All dreams die violently - the Hyuuga elders sacrificed Neji for Hinata, who killed herself after, and Hanabi is the new heir, and nothing has changed and nothing ever will - Branch and Main House, slave and owner and nothing ever changes except one more dead dream to lay atop the pile. Chouji is dead, Ino is in the mental ward, and Shikamaru is an ANBU captain with a death wish the size of his IQ.
Lee doesn't moon after her anymore. Not since she nearly killed him in a fit of mild aggravation.
Sometimes the Kazekage comes to Konoha for diplomatic matters, and he deigns to meet her dead(ly) eyes because she will be Rokudaime and everyone knows it. They fuck once, in a side room while waiting for Tsunade to recover from her drunken stupor du jour. She undoes his pants and rides his cock while she traces her sharp nails in swirling designs up and down his spine, and it is more thrilling than Kakashi because they could kill each other at any moment. Gaara knows it, and she knows it, and the thought combined with his savage bite on her shoulder makes her climax. She stifles her scream by biting the pulse point on his neck. He shudders and cums, and this time what she stifles is the urge to break his neck just because she could.
She doesn't heal the scratches once she is finished with him.
Maybe she let go of her team and killed her dream like none of her sensei ever thought to do, but she is still just as fucked in the head and issue-ridden as they are/were.
Dreams die because I kill them is her final thought on the matter, and she has never had a problem with lying to herself. It's just a quarter-lie, anyways. No biggie. She is wasting her life and lying to the world at every turn, and it gets to where she is a lie, but if she lies hard enough she becomes the lie and the lie becomes the truth. It's bleak and blazing, beautiful and hideous, and she can't look away, but somehow she does because she won't be caught in the fairy tale anymore.
Never mind that she is still caught, and she is wasting her life for nothing.

A.N.: This was inspired by Sunfreak's last line in her fic Sakura is Sakura and You Are Yourself on FFNet. Her Sakura is nothing like my Sakura - this is about the only way I can stand Sakura, actually. This is what it takes. Heh. I really do torture the characters with hot wax when I borrow them. Review!
Edited 3-10-07 Just cleaning up a couple of format mistakes. Ta!
