A Personal Thing

by yrena 0 Reviews

Things are a little more personal for Reno than he would have liked, especially concerning AVALANCHE and Cloud.

He really couldn't help it. It was just a job, a professional thing, but every time that blond little upstart got in his way it really pissed Reno off.

That so-called ex-SOLDIER that always managed to stop the turks, stop /him/, shouldn't even have existed. Reno looked up records... this guy hadn't even been a SOLDIER, he'd been an escort guard, a grunt. The kind Reno would take with him on missions when the other turks were busy.
So how could a upstart nobody defeat the turks, time after time again? It was impossible... wasn't it?

The turks always won before.

"...Reno?" Rude's sudden voice shocked him out of his woolgathering.

Reno turned to the man with a lopsided grin, as if nothing was the matter. "Yeah, partner?"

The bald man was not fooled for an instant, but chose to ignore it. If Reno didn't want to tell him just then, it was his prerogative, but not on company time. "You gonna steer, or crash us?"

Reno's face heated up and he turned his attention back to driving, now more irritated than ever at Cloud. The man got to Reno when he wasn't even there!

Heidegger himself had never irritated the redhead this much, and he had to start wondering why. Reno had prided himself on keeping emotionally distant in his work...

But, as he'd been finding out in the past year, the turks were changing. He was changing. Whether it was for the better or worse, only time would tell.

Maybe we all need a vacation after all that crap with Elfe.

That could be it, stress during such a big event could have its toll on the survivors... and they'd barely gotten any rest when the new AVALANCHE appeared.

AVANLACHE. Undermanned, disorganized, but still had managed to pull off more than Elfe's people had in such a short time. If the Turks had been at full power, they never would have gotten past the first bomb.

Reno decided it was all of those things, and he had a suspicion it was all because of Cloud. And Heidegger. But Heidegger was just stupid, so there was no point in really being angry at the unfortunate.

"Reno..."

"Yeah, yeah. I'm watching." Reno rolled his eyes, narrowly avoiding a tree. There was a roll and a crash in the back, amidst a squawking sound.

A red faced blond girl crawled through the flap separating back from front, and gave Reno a glare. "Let me drive."
"No way."

"Then at least LEARN to drive!" Elena sniffed, then went back, rubbing a bump on her head that looked rather red. She muttered under her breath a little and sighed.

"What's wrong with you?" Rude finally had to ask.

For a long while, Reno didn't reply, not certain if he should, maybe it was a breach of that personal affairs thing... Reno shrugged. "AVALANCHE. They're what's wrong."

That's all he had to say, everything he needed to say.

Rude nodded slowly. "...I know. How... right? Why? I don't know, bud." He reached up to adjust his glasses, giving a shrug. "...it kind of makes their sacrifice seem... pointless, doesn't it?"

Reno went cold all over, and rage bubbled up again. His hands gripped the steering wheel hard, until all of his knuckles were white. That...

"It wasn't."

He gave his partner an questioning look.

"They gave us a chance to fix it, make it right." Rude paused there, as usual, his way with words was almost exhausted. "They saved the planet... right? We're still here..."

"Yeah..." Reno didn't get where he was going with this. "But..."

"The planet had a lot more wrong with it than just that." Rude fell silent after that, slouching down in his seat as if he were tired.

"I don't get what you're saying, bud."

"We're still here... to save the rest."

Reno just started shaking his head with a sarcastic laugh. "Sometimes, Rude, you scare me."
