Incident 05: Disguise

It was funny and a little backwards. During Halloween, children would dress up and try to look like something other than children. They tried to look like characters they had seen on TV or video games. They tried to look like animals, aliens and many other things. Yet on that Halloween eve, one very unusual child was trying to look exactly like a child, or rather the humans around him were trying to make him look like a child.

"I can still tell he's a wyvern," Reno watched Dragoon squirm out of the clothes that were placed on him. Rufus knew about the wyvern's return and warned Reno not to let it run loose.

Due to the incident in which Dragoon announced his return by punishing Barret's bad singing with his fire breath during a karaoke get together at the Seventh Heaven, the gun arm man was not pleased to have the wyvern and his red haired adoptive father in the Seventh Heaven. However, Tifa was more forgiving and she was the owner of the establishment, so she gave the last word.

Thus Marlene, Denzel and Reno were currently trying to figure out how to include Dragoon in their trick or treat group. They had tried to dress him up as a child, but it didn't work out, they also tried a variety of costumes, but wyverns were not too keen on wearing clothes.

"Why can't he just go as he is?" Denzel inquired.

"I was thinking about that too, we can tell people he's wearing a really good wyvern costume," Marlene agreed.

"That would work if Rufus didn't know what he looks like. Tseng isn't going to allow this either. Everyone knows Shinra's Halloween party is where the best candy is and I don't want Dragoon to miss out. I should know, I always eat some of the candy during my mission to hand it out," Reno explained.

The two children and the sometimes childish man continued trying to figure out a way to include the non-human child in their holiday activities. Then suddenly in a stroke of genius, Denzel announced, "I have an idea, but we're going to need a lot of help from Tifa." Marlene and Reno listened as Denzel explained his plan. "If we can't disguise Dragoon, we'll disguise ourselves and they won't notice Dragoon if we're the same."

Marlene caught on, "I get it, we'll dress up as wyverns, we needed to come up with costume ideas and this is perfect. We'll trick Rufus and the Turks into thinking Dragoon is another kid, a shy boy who won't take off his mask."

"That's a good idea, if Tseng goes to throw you out and you reveal you're human, he won't insist on it too much so it doesn't look like he's kicking out the Avalanche kids. Rufus really wants this Halloween candy give away to improve Shinra's image, so the Turks will be especially careful of you, and I can act as the inside double agent and spy," Reno agreed.

"Is it okay? I mean, you're a Turk too," Denzel asked.

Reno was determined, for Dragoon's sake. "It'll be fine, I'm doing this for Dragoon, I don't want him to miss out on getting Halloween candy, I always had so much fun as a kid."

Thus the plan was decided, but they would need some very good costumes, that was where Tifa came in. "Tifa was always telling us not to leave things for the last minute when choosing our costumes," Marlene recalled. "I hope she'll still agree to sew our costumes today and they'll have to be very realistic."

"I think I can get a couple of costumes from Shinra, but they'll need to be modified to look exactly like Dragoon," Reno offered.

"That's good, it'll be faster that way," Denzel nodded.

"Except for the part when Tifa gets suspicious," Marlene brought up a valid point.

"Yeah, she'll probably figure it out," Denzel agreed.

"You should still ask her, I'll offer a bribe if needed. I'm going to sneak the costumes and materials out of Shinra, I'll leave you two to try to talk Tifa into this," Reno went off to carry out the first phase of their plan.

Denzel, Marlene and Dragoon headed downstairs to talk to Tifa. The children smiled sweetly and called "Tifa," in a song-like voice.

Tifa sighed; she knew what this was about. "Let me guess, you finally decided what you want to wear for Halloween and it's something complicated that you want me to sew in the next twenty-four hours."

Marlene and Denzel looked at each other and contemplated their options. Finally, Marlene spoke, "not exactly. Reno is bringing some costumes from Shinra, we just need help modifying them."

Tifa knew from their expressions that there had to be more to it than that, "and?"

"And they're the same, so we'll have matching costumes," Denzel filled in the following silence.

"And?" Tifa insisted suspicious.

"And we need your help," Marlene smiled and so did Denzel. They decided it was best not to continue elaborating on the situation.

"Alright, I'll find out what mischief you've learned from Reno this time soon enough," Tifa concluded. "Let's hope he brings the costumes soon, I still have a feeling the modifications will take a lot of time."

Modifying the dragon costumes Reno brought was not complex in terms of making them fit. Tifa only had to make them small enough to fit Marlene and Denzel; then came the complicated part, matching the color to Dragoon and adding all the tiny details of a realistic finish.

"Just as I suspected," Tifa didn't stop working as she spoke. "You two are going to sneak Dragoon into the Shinra party aren't you? I should have seen this coming. Why didn't you tell me? Dragoon is a sweet boy, well not a human boy but he's nice, except for breathing fire on Barret. I think he should be allowed to enjoy Halloween too."

"You're okay with it?" Marlene, Denzel and Reno inquired in a chorus.

"Just try to stay out of trouble," Tifa warned.
