“Look Al!” Ed ran like a maniac over to a fountain, now that there little dispute was over. Al arrived to an unhappy Ed…
“Is it blood?” The fountain had turned out to be red as blood.
“No. More like red wine.” There were cups on the side Ed scooped up the wine pouring it into his hand and back into the fountain.
“Hey! I thought I told you kids to stay away from the fountain!” An old man hit Ed on the head with a broom.
“Oh! So you’re not from around here?” The old man chuckled handing Ed and Al a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Al slid his over to Ed who had finished his already.
“Sorry for that bump on your head. Say, who are you anyway?” Ed pointed to himself with his almighty ego stating that he is…
“Edward and Alphonse Elric!” …And not noticing his ego or more like not paying attention to it the old man replied.
“So are you boys’ street performers?”
“Hey pal do I look like a street performer to you?!” Ed asked grunting indignantly. The old man ignored him but gave a chuckle to his non-responding response.
“Ella! Rose!” Ed turned his head as did Al seeing to girl in white dresses carrying bags. One girl was smiling and had pink and brown hair. The other one really caught Ed’s attention. She had a white dress too, but didn’t smile or even give off a trace that anyone around her existed, she just gave off a blank look, and though you could tell she was listening by the way she cringed at the old man’s calls.
“Listen pal we really need to be going. We’re looking for something. Al you ready?” Al gave a quick nod standing up, knocking the radio; that happened to be on the ledge; off sending it crashing to the ground.
“Ah! Look what you did, that is what you get for wearing that armor!”
“Don’t worry I can fix it.” Edward sighed in a helpless way.
“Brother let me do it.” Al took out a piece of chalk and drew circles overlapping triangles around the radio.
“What.? A circle?” The old man asked raising and eyebrow in a questioning manner and folding his arms. Ed shook his hand as Al raised his hands up as in an X formation. A flash of bright concentrated light pierced the middle of the circle starting to reform the broken radio, into what it was before; maybe even a bit newer.
“W-who did you say you were again?” Some man around the same age as he barkeep asked.
“I believe they are Edward and Alphonse Elric. They call the oldest the Fullmetal alchemist. But together they’re known as the Elric brothers.” A lady in a shaggy brown cloak stated calmly, resting her chin on a delicate hand.
“I see that’s why they call you the Fullmetal Alchemist! Is it because you in the armor?” People were making comments as Edward just stood there looking like he could kill a bunny rabbit….twice.
“That title ..ummmm..Belongs to my older brother.” Al gave a shy point to Edward, while holding up his arms in surrendering fashion. The older brother perked up.
“I don’t know. How could a pipsqueak like him be that?” Edward was pissed. He picked up two guys who made the comments and sung them around and around.
“Who are you calling a pipsqueak!???? Can a pipsqueak do this!??” The two men screamed apologies to the short, little man.
“Alchemy... You just used Alchemy.” Ella spoke which surprised everyone even Edward stopped what he was doing. Ella looked down as if she was going to cry, she stepped behind Rose.
There was a quick silence, which was gone, broken by the old man.
“Hey Rose are you done shopping?” The barkeep laid back against the counter; cleaning a glass.
“Mm-hm.” She gave a cheerful smile.
“Why don’t you give these guys the grand tour? And take them to Father Cornelio; They say their looking for something. I’m sure he can help.”
“Mmm. Okay. Is that okay, Ella?” Ella didn’t say anything; she just gave a hurt look, thinking that Rose might leave her, so she bit her lip and nodded. Ella would go along, Ella would follow, and Ella couldn’t be left alone.
“Come on. Maybe if you pray enough Father Corenello will make you Taller!” Rose shouted and started running as Edward came after her with curse after curse. Al and Ella trailed behind.
“So Ella how are you?” Al said trying to make a conversation.
“…I’m fine…Thank you.” She said not wanting to make a conversation.
“Hey Ella?” Al wouldn’t give up.
“Yes? What is it you want?” She hissed back hoping he would.
“Do you think…I’m a human?” Al had asked this to many people who didn’t know his secret.
“Al…I would not care if you were human or not. I know you are not whole inside…But you are very human.” Al took this as a shock and a complement. ”But Al d-do you think I am?” Al stared at her as the small girl gave a soft, pleading look, after a moment of silence she turned her head away.
“Wh-what do you mean? You are human aren’t you?” Ella shook her head.
“Not exactly Al. Forget it.” She gave a smile, which made Al smile on the inside.
“You look a lot like Ed. Did you know that?” Al’s voice rebounded in his armor and echoed through Ella’s ears. Ella gave a slight from and touched her face; she picked up Al’s hand and stared at the metal and cloth.
“I look like Edward?” She whispered under her breath. Ella thrust the bags into Al’s arms.
“Take those to Rose. Bye Al!” She started running but turned back and gave Al a slight hug, the ran and bounded around a corner.
“But wait!” Al was too late Ella was gone. Since Al had no idea where his brother was so he just wondered around the town admiring the beauty and the calm… That is until he heard his brother scream something at Rose. Al ran into a church following the noise. He stopped outside the doors. Pressing his nonexistent ear to the door, he listened to the argument.
“Rose. Listen to me! That man is a fraud! He’s using Alchemy to trick you all!” Edward yelled, and he could have sworn he heard Rose crying.
Al felt something tap his head and he began to worry.
“Don’t move. Your little friend will soon join you.” The man who stood behind Al shot the gun that had tapped his head sending the detached helmet flying in and rolling next to Edward.
Ella screamed, her friend was in danger. “No stop it! What are you doing?” Her white dress was stained with a purplish black liquid that flowed from her arm.
“Rose! Rose!” Black tears flowed down her face, “Edward is telling the truth! Rose, he isn’t coming back. Do you really want your only love to end up like me? A monster, something that isn’t human? That’s what is going to happen, Rose, he’s just using us. Corenello is…a…fake.” She collapsed to the floor Ella’s blood poured out onto the black marble. “Al, I know you can hear me. It isn’t the stone, it’s a fake. Don’t take away the people’s happiness. Don’t reveal him.” Ella’s ruby eyes closed, at least she had helped.
Edward flinched away from the blood and turned to Rose.
“What did she mean? A monster?” Edward ask picking up Al’s head and throwing it at the man who the gun. Rose stood there in horror, her body shaking.
“Tell me!” Edward shook her violently.
“She…Ella…She’s the product of bring someone back to life. I am the only one besides Father Corenello who knew. She died at the age of two months, from a deadly fever. Ella’s father and mother were crushed and heartbroken, so he read and studied, to bring back his little girl. He sacrificed his life, and brought her back from the gate. At least some parts of her. Ella was missing her soul, her left arm and right leg and her eyes. That’s what they could tell from the awful mess. It wasn’t really Ella, the thing was mangled and deformed… A monster.” Rose fell to her knees and sobbed. “She told me all of this as if she knew first hand herself. And when I asked her what any of it meant, she shook her head and went back to being a mute. I don’t know who she really is! I don’t know what the gate is, I don’t know who her mother and father is. I don’t even know her real name! I just named her Ella. She hardly ever spoke, always listened. Ella told me that with help she became normal again, from someone from the Military. The Flame Alchemist. He gave her eyes, and arm and a leg, all made from some special form of auto mail, called R-CAME. And even a place in the Military, she was called the Death Evangelist Alchemist. I don’t know why…” Rose finished her monologue with a scream. There stood a headless Al cradling Ella, and trying to stop the bleeding.
“Brother, help me! She’s going to die!” Al replaced his head and ran over to his brother, leaving a trail of blood flowing behind him. Edward turned away from Rose after telling her to leave the room and stall Corenello for them.
“Al, I don’t know if I can. She’s lost to much blood.” Edward gave his brother a knowing look. Ella was going to die. And she was the only other lead they might have gotten to the Philosopher’s stone.
“Try…” His voice was pleading; he didn’t want to lose someone who would accept him. His voice broke, “She’s still breathing, brother please.”
Edward took the girl from his brother and laid her down on the prayer mantle. Edward pressed his gloved hands together and grasped Ella’s head on both sides, he closed his eyes in concentration. Within seconds a black light spread over her body, Edward wanted to scream in pain but he was paralyzed by the dark aura.
After five minutes Al was getting worried, his brother hadn’t moved and nothing even happened.
Then the clock struck six minutes, the seven. Edward screamed but no sound came out, his face contorted by pain was the only thing showing his apparent discomfort.
Visions flooded Edward’s head of his mother, and of his father. Both lying dead on the floor, their hands intertwined as the house burned around them. In between them laid himself, Al and Ella as little ones. Ella deformed just as his mother was, Al missing his soul, and Edward his arm and leg. The fire slowly spread, distorting his vision and clouding his mind. Voices screamed in his head, familiar and once comforting voices.
And one he did not remember.
“Brother! Brother! Look what I found! It’s a fallen angel.” Little hands suddenly appeared in his point of seeing, and lying in the middle a small with dove with a torn wing; dead in the pale palms. He heard Al crying, ‘She killed my friend! She killed her!’
“Did you kill the bird?” His own voice cracked.
“Yup! I used what dad showed me. So birdie all done.” The hands disappeared to reveal Resembool, and a small girl with golden hair running away with the dead dove.
Edward tore from the girl with what power he had left. Ella cave a shallow cough and sat up holding her arm and leaving one eye closed, she panted, her chest heaving.
“Never use Alchemy on me. Never. You’ll disrupt my structural pattern.” Ella sighed and stood up, with Al’s help the made way towards the door.
“Ella, what did I see? Who was the girl?” Edward asked wheezing and trying to keep up with Al. She simply shrugged and pointed to a hotel.
“I live there, you both can rest there for the night. But you must leave in the morning or else Cornello will find you, and try and kill you.” Unlocking the door to the back, she limped, and led the way to a basement.
Once settled into the living room with Edward asleep on the couch and Al settled on the floor, Ella and Al talked.
“You’re a homunculi?” Al asked Ella who was sitting on his metal chest plate and staring down at him with her ruby eyes.
“Yes, I am one of eight. The others call me Death. The final of the homunculi, I wrap up the other seven, I basically own and control what powers they get, and when they use them. Or at least I used to, but I have been replaced and stripped of that title.” Ella explained folding her arms.
“So, you are what happened when… umm...” Al didn’t know how to word it right so as to not hurt her feelings.
“Yes, I am what transpired when human transmutation occurs.” Her eyes trailed to Edward then back to Al.
“Same happened with your mother. I have seen her, she talks about you two, ya know? Apparently you were quite the crier.” Ella smiled when Al protested.
“I was not! Edward cried all the time, not me.”
“Liar!” Edward joined the conversation, quickly waking up from his fake slumber. “I hardly ever cried! You’re the cry-baby!”
Ella rolled her eyes and held the two brothers back from attacking each other; she laughed and shoved them back.
Edward fell on his butt and pouted, and Al sat there and sniffled.
“Okay you boys, lay down and go to sleep. Even if you can’t.” She cut off Al’s protest.” We can talk a little bit in the morning as you two pack.”
