Story Eight: Invention Vacation
When a maid arrived at the Maoh's room to inform that Anissina had called Yuri and Wolfram to the tea room, they feared that she would once again ask them to help her test one of her inventions, despite the possible consequences.
"We can't go," Wolfram warned.
But Yuri wouldn't listen, "it's mean to refuse an invitation; besides I don't want to hurt Anissina's feelings. She's been trying very hard to help and she deserves some credit for that," even if her inventions didn't quite work the way they were supposed to.
"I always knew you were a wimp, but I didn't know you were suicidal!" Wolfram yelled.
"I'm not! Besides, we're fine, right? Anissina's inventions might have caused trouble but look on the bright side!" Yuri was as optimistic as ever.
But Wolfram couldn't see the silver lining that was so blindingly bright. "What bright side?"
"It brought us closer together by dealing with all the challenges," Yuri replied.
Wolfram gave his fiancé's words some thought. "You're right."
"Then we agree; Anissina deserves to at least hear us excuse ourselves in person!" Yuri started heading for the door, he looked back at Wolfram, "what?"
Wolfram laughed, "you're a wimp but I guess you're not a stupid wimp."
"I'm not a wimp either!" The Maoh walked down the halls of Blood Pledge Castle along with Wolfram. Yuri smiled for seemingly no reason, a gesture that Wolfram noticed.
"Why are you smiling?" Wolfram asked curiously.
"For no reason, I'm just in a good mood," Yuri himself had not noticed his own radiant mood. After coming to terms with his feelings recently, he came to enjoy every second of his time with Wolfram even more. Sure he liked being with Wolfram before, but it was a whole lot easier to enjoy Wolfram's presence when Yuri wasn't denying the reason why he enjoyed it so much. Now it was just a matter of telling Wolfram.
"Even if we might be marching to our doom?" Wolfram asked.
"What makes you say that?" Yuri looked adorable with that curious, half confused expression.
It made Wolfram want to kiss Yuri, but he didn't want to upset him if he wasn't ready to kiss fully conscious without the effects of exhaustation or fever. "Because you're a wimp and a softie, and I know you'll end up helping Anissina even if you said you wouldn't!"
Yuri laughed, admittedly Wolfram knew him well, "alright, you caught me."
Wolfram sighed, "I knew it..."
They soon reached the tea room where Anissina was waiting. She was holding an envelope; some of her latest intentions had been small, but still dangerous. Both Yuri and Wolfram kept their eyes on the suspicious envelope while Anissina spoke, "I felt really bad about the side effects caused by the inventions you both helped me test; that's why I came up with some apology gifts!"
Yuri and Wolfram gulped and looked at each other, then back at Anissina. "Thanks but you didn't have to, I mean... you don't need to apologize, you tried to fix things and everyone is safe so it's okay." the Maoh spoke nervously. If Anissina's gifts involved new inventions, then there might be more trouble, but Yuri didn't have the heart to openly refuse a gift.
"I must insist!" Anissina handed Yuri the envelope. Wolfram wanted to say something but he knew that Yuri would be hurt if Anissina was hurt because he was just too kind and couldn't stand hurting others, directly or indirectly.
"Um... thanks..." Yuri received the envelope and nervously opened it. It looked as if he had no choice but to accept and use whatever was in there. Inside the envelope there was list, Yuri read the first line aloud "Dock Five: Calm Ocean," he blinked, the rest of the contents of the list consisted of names of places. "What is it?"
"A vacation!" Anissina cheered. "This is my gift for the two of you; I arranged a vacation, just for the Maoh and his fiancé. This way you can relax, spend some quality time together and have fun. I already arranged for accommodations in each of those locations, and the ship called Calm Ocean is waiting for you on Dock Five. Wolfram, you don't need to worry because as soon as you get on the ship you'll find an invention that will cure your sea sickness!"
"A vacation," Yuri smiled brightly, "thanks Anissina! This great!" Maybe that's why Yuri got nervous and chickened out of admitting his feelings for Wolfram, even if he knew they were mutual, because it wasn't the right time. But Yuri would be alone on vacation with Wolfram, so the right time had to come sometime during the vacation.
"I'm very pleased you liked the gift, it's the least I can do to apologize and thank you for all the help!" Anissina was smiling from ear to ear, with a slight hint of mischief as if she was hiding a secret.
"This will be great! Wolfram what do you say?" Yuri tried to remind his fiancé to say thanks.
But Wolfram was off in happy day dram land, imagining himself and Yuri taking a long romantic walk along a beach in the sunset. Wolfram was determined to be as charming as he could possibly be, that combined with the romantic atmosphere and the much needed privacy, would definitely push Yuri over the edge of denial and finally make him admit his feelings.
"Wolfram," Yuri gently shook Wolfram's shoulder, observing the big happy grin adorning his face.
With his emerald eyes shining like stars and anticipation for the trip building up, Wolfram finally said "thanks," as Yuri expected him to. But the tone held much more gratitude than either Yuri or Anissina had ever heard Wolfram express.
Yuri and Wolfram returned to their room to pack, since they were leaving on the very next day. The two young men had not noticed the figure behind the curtains since they were too preoccupied with the fear of a coming disaster at first, and then they were too busy with the joy of their vacation and the relief of escaping becoming guinea pigs, at least for the moment being.
Cecilie came out from her hiding place behind the curtains, clapping softly so as to not make too much noise and blow their cover. "A brilliant performance," she congratulated Anissina on her acting.
"Thank you!" Anissina vowed like a stage performed would, and the two women laughed together. "Although, it's too bad they agreed to go on vacation so easily and I didn't get to test my latest invention. Total Exhaustion, guaranteed to make anyone tired of everything around them and feel an inexplicable need to go on vacation!" Anissina lifted the tea table's cloth to reveal an odd machine under it. It looked like a metal box with glass balls attached and red, yellow and blue wires wrapped around it.
"We should send it as a gift to the neighboring lands," Cecilie suggested, "then people would get tired of their lives there and come on vacation to New Mazoku. It could do wonders for the tourist industry."
To be Continued
Disclaimer, I don't own Kyo Kara Maoh. Having Cecilie and Anissina in the same place can be quite dangerous, especially when they start to plot. This plot bunny came out of nowhere and suddenly I wanted to send Wolfram and Yuri off on vacation. That very same plot bunny came with lots of fun ideas for the vacation, but of course comments and suggestions are always welcome! I'm going to have so much fun writing their vacation, and I hope you have fun reading it too. This was supposed to be a collection of one shots that could be read in any order, but somehow it has evolved into a continuous story. You know how it is when plot bunnies take on a life of their own.
