Show Your True Feelings

Story Seven: Childish

Yuri slowly opened his eyes to a new day. The Maoh yawned and stretched, and realized that he didn't have someone hugging him this morning. "Wolfram?" It was rare for Wolfram to wake up before Yuri. Something small moved under the blankets. "Greta is that you?" Though their daughter had a room of her own, sometimes she came by. He lifted the blanket, but instead of Greta, Yuri found another child, a blond child with big green eyes.

The boy pointed his finger at Yuri in surprise, "Wimp got big!"

Yuri's jaw dropped, "Wolfram?!" Without wasting a second, Yuri picked up the toddler and ran to find Anissina. Gwendal might have become nearly immune to the side effects of Anissina's inventions by continued exposure to them, but Yuri had recently suffered from a side effect, and now Wolfram could be experiencing another strange side effect.

Anissina, Cecilie and Greta were having breakfast together, and Cecilie was coincidentally showing Greta pictures of her daddy Wolfram when he was little.

Yuri was out of breath from running, carrying a hyper active toddler who kept complaining and saying he was able to walk himself. "Anissina," Yuri gasped for breath, "Wolfram... invention..."

Cecilie gasped, "oh my goodness, Anissina, you didn't!" There was a dramatic pause, during which Yuri thought that Wolfram's mother knew what was going on, "by the power of science Yuri was able to give birth to Wolfram's child!" but turned out that the ex-Maoh had no idea.

"It's not like that!" Yuri immediately denied the odd scenario.

"Wolfram gave birth, then?" Cecilie asked.

"No! No one gave birth, this is Wolfram," it was hard to believe, but the small adorable toddler wrapped in a blanket, was actually Wolfram.

"Side effect!" Anissina announced, almost as if it was something to be proud of. "Yuri's side effect was to become allergic to Wolfram because of the way he avoids admitting his feelings, so it would make sense to conclude that Wolfram's side effect would also be something that fits him."

"I see," Cecilie nodded, "then Wolfram turned into a child because he's so childish, that makes sense." She had been informed about the latest experiments as soon as she came to visit, before continuing her travels.

"I'm not chil-lish!" Little Wolfram complained.

The answer was a collective "aw!"

"Yuri! Can I play with Wolfram, please?" Greta asked, as if Wolfram was a new toy.

"Sure," Yuri set Wolfram on the floor.

"Cute!" Greta petted Wolfram's hair.

"I'm still your dad Greta, okay?" Wolfram pointed out, though it was hard to believe when he was smaller than her.

"How do we change him back?" Yuri observed Anissina's expression; he had a bad feeling about this.

"Do we have to?" Anissina innocently asked. "He's so cute like this..."

Yuri was about to protest, but the truth was that baby Wolfram was cute. He was cute as a grownup too, but this was a different kind of cuteness. "I guess it's not so bad..." Yet Yuri felt an inexplicable pain. As adorable as this child was, the Wolfram he knew could never be replaced, and the little boy somehow felt as if he was a different person.

Wolfram pouted, bringing another collective "aw!"

"I need to be growned up again!" Wolfram complained. "I'm too young to mar-ry Yuri like tis!"

"I don't think this is permanent," it worried Yuri that Anissina didn't say it wasn't permanent, but that she didn't think it was. "You should be back to normal eventually." There was also the uncertainty of when would that eventual time would come.

As the day rolled by, everyone gave little Wolfram plenty of attention, which kept him busy and away from Yuri, until Anissina came running towards the Maoh with a baby in her arms. "Emergency! Take Wolfram, I must do research!"

"Eh?" Yuri blinked, and received the baby. "Wolfram?"

"Wee!" The child in his arms squealed.

"Are you trying to say wimp? Wait, you're the same Wolfram? Anissina, why is he so small?" Yuri feared the worse.

"He's a little unstable, at this rate he'll keep getting smaller until..." Anissina bit her lip; to speak such a fate about such an adorable child was too cruel. "I'm sorry, I'll definitely save him!" With renewed determination, Anissina ran off, "Gwendal, Conrad, Gunter, get ready to test the next antidote!"

"I feel sorry for them but..." Yuri looked at the baby, "I don't want you to disappear. I also miss Wolfram... Yes, I know you're Wolfram but I see you as a different person. Wolfram was childish, you're a child and that's different..."

The baby squirmed and his big green eyes became teary. The sigh was just heartbreaking to Yuri. "Don't cry! I'm sure you'll change back. I guess it must be frustrating being trapped in such a small body, but please don't cry. I'm sure we'll make it out of this and when you're big again we could go someplace fun, just the two of us, okay?"

Yuri gently rocked the baby in his arms. He stayed in his room holding the baby and waiting for good news about the research. Every now and then, Wolfram would start to fade, but Yuri's voice brought him back.

A couple of hours passed and baby Wolfram began to fade out of existence again. But this time, no matter how much Yuri called him, he disappeared. "Wolfram!" Yuri only held the hastily and poorly knitted baby clothes that were a mysterious anonymous gift that arrived at a very convenient time, though everyone knew they were from Gwendal. "He's gone... Wolfram is..." Yuri ran towards the door of his room, he would tell Anissina about this right away and maybe she would be able to bring him back somehow. If not, then maybe Murata would know something, or even Ulrike, anyone.

But the door was opened suddenly, and Yuri was knocked back to the floor. "It's your fault for standing there, wimp!"

Yuri rubbed his eyes, and stared to make sure he was seeing correctly. "Wolfram!" The Maoh glomped his fiancé tightly, "I'm so glad you're alright, I thought that you were gone forever!" Yuri loved Wolfram and he knew it, but he had not told him yet.

"Why are you hugging me all of a sudden?" Wolfram sounded surprised, but he returned the embrace. "You sound as if you thought I died or something."

"But you disappeared; you were baby, the side effect!" Yuri tried to explain, but he kept trying to say too many things at once.

Footsteps were heard and Anissina, Gwendal, Conrad and Gunter crowded around the door. It was obvious that all four had seen better days. With messy hair and ragged clothes, it became apparent they had recently survived an explosion. "We came to give you the news but it looks like you already know. It turns out that baby Wolfram was not Wolfram at all. He was a magical copy, an illusion destined to disappear. My apologies for all the trouble," Anissina explained.

"Then Wolfram wasn't in danger? That's a relief, don't worry about it, everyone's safe and that's all that matters." As usual, Yuri was quick to forgive.

"We'll be consoling mother, she was disappointed that the baby was an illusion and couldn't be kept forever. Call if you need anything," Conrad voiced. Anissina, Gwendal, Gunter and Conrad went off to console Cecilie.

"What's this all about? Didn't we agree to meet at the city gates in the morning to go somewhere together? You said you would go!" Wolfram was still very confused with the situation.

"This morning when I woke up, I found a toddler who looked just like you. I thought you were turned into a baby and Anissina said it was a side effect of her inventions. Everyone kept playing with the baby all day. Then, when I finally had some time with him, I was told that the baby would disappear soon if he didn't change back. I still thought it was you and when the baby disappeared I thought you disappeared. But it turns out that the baby was only an illusion that came from you, that was the real side effect," Yuri explained, "it's too bad because he was so cute! But now it makes sense why he felt like a different person, he was created from you, but he was still an illusion. Poor baby..."

"Didn't you just say the baby was an illusion?" Wolfram asked.

"Yes, but still, he was so cute!" Yuri was sad to have witnessed the adorable child disappear, but he was also thankful that his Wolfram was safe. "Sorry I didn't go meet you..."

"I guess I can forgive you since you didn't forget, you just thought I was still in the castle as a baby. But don't you dare leave me waiting ever again!" Wolfram was relieved that Yuri didn't forget, and didn't simply decide not to go. It had all been a misunderstanding.

"I won't," Yuri breathed in relief; his life had been very busy lately. He would have to admit his feelings for Wolfram sometimes soon, he still hasn't confessed, but at least he gave up on denial.

Wolfram curiously poked Yuri's forehead, "looks like you got a bump on your head..."

"Ow! Don't poke it! That was from when you threw the door open," Yuri placed his hand over the affected area.

Wolfram took the Maoh's hand, revealing the sore spot and kissed it gently. "Sorry."

"It's okay, I'm just happy you're back safely," Yuri smiled.

End of Story Seven

Disclaimer, I don't own Kyo Kara Maoh. I used the concept of the side effects for this story too, so another special thanks to Val-Creative.
