Chapter 16
"Congratulations Timmy Turner, of all the men that ever liked me," 'either for looks or money', Vicky mentally added; "you are by far the most stubborn!" 'And possibly the only one with some amount of truth to his feelings', she didn't really want to admit it.
"Does that mean you'll go out with me?" Timmy had learned the hardships of having flowers shoved back at him, being literally kicked out, having to use magic to obtain Vicky' new phone number and the hand print on his face still stung.
Any sane man would have given up ages ago, but Timmy Turner was just that stubborn, or maybe a little insane some would argue.
"I'm not giving you a single dollar," Vicky started.
"I'm not asking for it, I'll even pay for the date," Timmy offered.
Vicky continued, "I'm not letting you lay a finger on me."
"I can respect that," Timmy agreed.
"I'm not going to be nice, considerate, sweet, caring, loving or any variant of that," Vicky warned.
"I'm not fond of being your doormat but I'll endure it," Timmy grumbled, this was for the sake of saving her life.
"I don't understand you at all. Do you honestly think that I'll suddenly change?" Vicky asked.
"It would be great if were nice, but it doesn't matter if you stay the same as long as you keep an open mind to the possibility of falling in love," Timmy replied with a straight face, completely serious.
Vicky cursed in frustration and shoved Timmy towards the door.
But he firmly planted his feet on the floor and refused to move. "You can't push me away."
"If I give you a good kick where you can't kick me back, you won't sound so sure of that," Vicky growled.
Timmy gulped and tried to think of what to say, "why are you so scared?"
"Scared? I assure you, I'm not afraid of you."
"Not of me, of love. Why are you so scared it'll happen? I won't break your heart, I promise." Timmy felt guilty saying this since he had thought about breaking up as soon as Vicky was curse free. Sure Wanda had said this required love, but unlike in fairy tales; love wasn't always mutual for humans and just because it had a chance to last, that didn't guarantee that it would.
Vicky let a sigh escape her lips, "that's not going to work, you just want me to foolishly try to prove how brave I am and end up doing exactly what you want."
"Fine, then tell me what you want me to do," this was so frustrating to Timmy. There he was, trying to save Vicky's life in a brave act of self sacrifice and she had to make it so hard.
Vicky took a deep breath, "alright... Tell me what you like about me and don't be mushy."
"Okay..." So Vicky didn't want a shakespearian speech, she wanted facts and at first Timmy thought that made it harder. Then he remembered he wasn't good at romantic acts so maybe it was best this way. "Well... you're b-" Timmy spotted Wanda frantically shaking her head behind Vicky but she poofed away before Vicky spotted her. Don't mention the obvious first, leave mentioning beauty for last and never mention money, Timmy got the message. "Very smart," Timmy finally said. He paused and gave it some more thought, the silence was becoming too long and he had to say something, "and beautiful," it was true but it was too much of an obvious compliment, "you're also brave." Okay good, he was on the right path, "you're talented, athletic, and skilled. You have ambition and you can really triumph. You know what you want and how to get it," Timmy felt like he was reading from a fortune cookie. "Really what's not to like?"
"I don't know," Vicky responded with sarcasm to that last part, "why don't you tell me what's not to like?"
To say nothing would sound like a lie, because it was a lie. "You're mean, but I know you can be nice..."
"You know Timmy, that's the problem with people; they fall in love with the image of who someone could be, instead of who they are," Vicky voiced.
"You're right," Timmy admitted, "but I want to rephrase that, you're nice but you don't trust people so you put up a big mean defense. Maybe you're not so brave after all, at least not in that area. You only appear brave because you don't let anything get past your defenses, but you don't face situations directly; you don't face people directly; you just make them run away... but I'm not running away."
"Why? What's in it for you?" Vicky insisted.
"You."
"You have no idea how frustrating you are," Vicky was used to having people run away or beg for mercy at this point, but that wasn't happening. She had people fight back before, and that included Timmy, but all she had to do was beat them in the battle. She also had people put up with her in silence, but never before did someone take everything she dished out and at the same time stood up for themselves. Timmy was doing that, and it felt completely new to Vicky. It was as if nothing would work to bring him down.
"The feeling is mutual," Timmy spoke truthfully.
"I still don't understand why you insist on being so stubborn."
'Because you need me more than you know,' Timmy thought.
"Fine, go home; I'll think about it, you can at least show you can give me some space when I need it, right?" Vicky was tired of this, she needed some time to plot, but it was hard when part of her thought she should just feel lucky and stop denying herself a wish she refused to admit she had.
"Okay, I understand, I'll let you think about it." Timmy finally left and returned home. He was exhausted but it looked like he made some progress if only a little. He had a feeling that the next day would be both difficult and rewarding, and he had no idea how right he was.
But today wasn't over yet and when Timmy got home he found his parents waiting with worried expressions. "Timmy, we need to talk..." and he didn't like his mother's tone.
"Let me guess Vicky called you, didn't she?" It wouldn't be the first time she did something like this.
"Sorry to disappoint you but no," Mr. Turner replied.
Mrs. Turner continued, "we know you've been going to see her as more than an assistant. We trust Vicky so we didn't say anything. I've been thinking about this and I remember how I felt when I thought the two of you... went too fast. But if you're willing to do things slowly, then I won't try to stop you."
Timmy simply stared at his parents until his father spoke, "what your mother is trying to say is, go get her casanova!"
