If you don't go with option two and go AU then I will basically stop reading. What do I care about plot holes in canon? This is fanfiction where the whole point is to either elaborate on the existing story or go off on a tangent. I prefer the tangent part but in the end with you being the author that is your call and you can choose to elaborate on the story by pointing out the plot holes. I just won't continue to read it.
