Still with the minor tweaks
We've made quiet a few sadly non-visible improvements to the structure of the site since our last news update. We also removed a case in the story upload page where it could mess up the spacing on your story.

Still working on the author and story alerts.
Dagmar I'm still trying to figure out how/where my line breaks are going wrong; any ideas? Every story I've uploaded so far only fills about 2/3rds of the page, whereas my original html files look perfectly fine. (I'm writing in word .docs, then let Windows do the html conversion, if that helps.)
Thank you!

queasy Dagmar, it looks like word is adding line-breaks to your html. If you don't use a lot of fancy formatting like italics, bold or underline, you might be better off saving your stories as story.txt, or using the upload form and inserting your own html tags like so italics.

Dagmar I'm "using" just what Word puts in there. sigh And I reuploaded a fic as .txt, with only italics, bold and center tags, and I still have the superfluous line breaks. Grrr.

queasy Ok, I've just tested this out with one of your stories (because I thought the length might be an issue). Try cutting and pasting the text from your original word document into the story text field (big space just above the story file field) instead of uploading as a file. Add any necessary tags. Then scroll down and check that the lines don't break in the middle but fill up the whole field - those will become line breaks when you add the story.

Dagmar Hmm. I'll have to try that with another story, then; I usually don't keep the .docs once I've converted to hmtl. One reason why I use .doc is that I don't WANT to put the tags in manually; I usually spend more time hunting for errors than anything else.
Why the heck doesn't the pasting of .htm text into that field work, anyway?

queasy That's because the line breaks are already in the html, I'm afraid. One thing you could try - go to edit stories, cut and paste the text from the story field in word, then find and replace all br tags with nothing. Cut and paste the result back in the story field, and preview to see if there's anywhere you want to add a line break back in.

queasy My mistake, shouldn't post before I'm fully awake. What you do is open the html file, go to View Source, and cut and paste everything in Word. Then delete everything that is not part of your story and author's notes, and run a seach and replace to remove all p, /p and br tags. Once the text looks the way you want it to look - no tags except for the bold, italics and centre tags, don't save. Cut and paste it in the story field in the Edit Stories option, preview and submit changes.

Dagmar sigh Yeah, I guess that's what I need to do. Still, a hell of a lot of work ... damn Microsoft anyway for putting in so much useless junk ...
