Where we are now
As you can see from the previous post, our cpu usage has been getting a bit out of control. This is, obviously, a problem. (It's a far worse problem than bandwidth or disk space, because it requires a far more expensive jump in hosting costs to combat.)

Now, this may come as a great shock to some of you, but FicWad does not, actually, make a lot of money. Surprising, I know. We haven't made any particular effort to monetize it, largely because the ads are doing okay at paying our current hosting bills.

Since the ads don't bring in enough to pay for dedicated hosting, I'll be trying to optimize a lot of things about the site over the next few weeks. Cleaning up the two queries which Dreamhost complained about has brought us a lot of wiggle room, and I know a lot more about how to do these things properly than I did two years ago when FicWad was started.

All you should notice because of this is faster load times on some pages. If I start changing how things work I'll make sure to announce it here.

(In the process of this cleaning up, I will finally fix the character approval function, which has been sitting there in pieces for the last year-and-a-half. Promise.)

The really positive side-effect of the Great Story Vanishing of two days ago is that I had to quickly get a whole lot of obstacles out of the way on my development server. Thus everything is ready for me to start hacking away once more.

To sum up: things will improve.

And no, I'm not surprised that this site doesn't bring in millions of dollars. The days when that worked are definitely over:)
