Warnings and Characters
We've made "Child/Underage Sex" into a separate warning--we're hoping to keep the list of warnings as short as possible, since a million random letters in a fic's description can get confusing pretty fast. Please visit our Help section for a complete list of fic warnings (http://www.ficwad.com/help.php#38). Also, remember that you can mouse over a warning in a fic description to see what the warning means.

A few users have requested that the Characters field be made optional when uploading stories. We're currently working on an "Other" option, with a way to suggest new characters for the category at the same time. This should be happening in the next couple of days. In the meantime, please continue to use our Suggest form (http://www.ficwad.com/suggest.php) to suggest new characters, and as always, we'll try to get them added within 24 hours.

akatonbo ponders Still trying to decide what I think of the underage warning. I suspect it'll end up not being helpful. There are many different KINDS of stories in which one or both parties involved in a sexual encounter are under 18 (or some other standard of underage since that's not the only one) -- there are fandoms where hardly any of the characters are over 18 anyway and almost every pairing is two underage characters; there are pairings between an underage character and an adult and the nature of those pairings differs a lot; there are pairings involving VERY underage characters (and different people may have different ideas about what is too underage for them). There are also characters whose physical and chronological ages are different. One warning can't really handle all of that very well, and for people who care about it at all, it's often such a hot-button issue. (Then again, being not much of a warnings person in general, I tend to figure it's the reader's responsibility to know enough about the fandom that they're reading to be able to identify age issues from the pairing and story scenario anyway. Anybody who knows the first thing about Gundam Wing, for example, should know better than to read Heero x Duo smut if they don't want to see characters under 18 having sex.)

admin Our philosophy on warnings is that even if there isn't a system in place, most authors will add them to the summary anyway. If it's important enough that the authors feel the need to go out of their way to mention it, then why not have a flag for it?

You make a good point that in most fandoms, anyone familiar with the fandom will be able to tell just by seeing the pairing. On the other hand, there are some fandoms where that's not the case--some books/movies/shows will cover a character's entire life, so there's no way to tell whether there's underage sex just by the pairing. For that matter, since we also archive original fiction, there's no such thing as fandom knowledge in that category.

Northlight Maybe you could include an "other" option for warnings, as you do with characters. You wouldn't have to add those warnings to your official list of warnings, but people who are concerned about/want to promote a certain kink can do so.
