PikaBot >And, if a poem is an actual poem and not just a story written in poetic form, then I am not sure it can be a mary sue.

The Highwayman and The Raven take objection with your definition of a poem.
Rous How so? I know that The Raven is a poem; I am not as familiar with The Highwayman. Do they both not use rhyme and meter? I did not mean a poem that tells a story, but rather a story broken up into short lines like a poem. I have seen some that have no meter or rhyme, thus coming across as just bad formatting. Some writers who have little or no concept of what poetry is think that short lines of five or six words constitutes a poem. Thus, you end up with a choppy story. THAT can be a mary sue, but would you call something like The Highwayman a mary sue? Now, if The Bar Killer, but Riley was written in story form, I would consider it a possible mary sue, but as a poem, it is just humorous. The same rules for sueism do not apply for poetry and prose.
PikaBot Alright, that's what you meant by that.

but a story told like the Highwayman could be just as much a Sue as any other story. The Highwayman ISN'T, obviously, but I cant see any reason why just because you throw in a meter and rhyme it miraculously loses the ability to contain a Mary Sue.
Rous Well, I think that it is because most poetry is highly subjective. It is usually personal, whereas prose is not always so. If I were to write a poem where I was the focus of the poem, and I wrote things that were exaggerated, it could be construed as my feelings, my desires, how I see myself. However, if I wrote a story that way, or a fanfic, then that could easily be a mary sue.

I suppose what I really meant was a mary sue prose written to emulate a poem, when in reality, it was just someone's ill-conceived idea of what poetry is supposed to be. You are right, rhyme and meter do not always make a good poem. Content has a bit to do with it. LOL
Neptune Well, fan poetry (especially if it was epic poetry along the lines of The Oddysey) could still contain an OC of Sueish proportions.
