How To Rate Your Own Story- PG-13, R or NC-17
I just posted my first story and I'm not sure how to rate it. What is the difference between them? How do you decide which to use? My story has a lot of slash and sexual content. Is it written anywhere on the site what the criteria are? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

~Harley Quinn
helluin As far as I can tell, PG-13 is mild violence or a few swear words or people kissing and fade to black before anything is groped or clothing is removed. R may have stronger violence, and when there's sex you don't describe it in detail, just with a few metaphors so the reader can imagine it or not. NC-17 is when you describe the sex explicitly.

That's just my own impression, largely based on the ratings people use in Livejournal Final Fantasy fic -- see http://ff_press.livejournal.com for a typical list -- but I think if you follow those rules of thumb you'll generally hit the target audience you intended and not the one that will be offended. ;)
Ellaquent The Gerard one is NC-17. Definitely. I so just followed you over from fandom without meaning to...

NC-17 is for the fics you know children should not ever, ever, ever be reading. PG-13 is probably a little more teen movie than slasher movie - what helluin said.
Nightmare_angel hey, I was wondering the exact same thing! Cool!!!
micman G - holding hands

PG - a kiss

PG-13 - a passionate kiss

R - sex scene, violence, swearing

NC_17 - lots of sex scenes, rape, death, freaquent swearing
shadesmaclean So far, I've only posted 2 stories, but I've tried to picture how they would be rated if they were movies, and used that as the basis for my ratings. (Though, with the exception of my most recent one, which is fairly tame, I usually go for at least PG-13, just to cover my bases.) Most of my stuff hovers in that grey area between PG-13 and R, so I usually swing it depending on the intensity of the violence.
joy2008 What about something that is pretty G rated for the first two thirds and the last part has sexual harrassment? And would you put a warning in those chapters?
luvflippy Idk? I usually do Rated-R because if your doing love stories or like killing scenes then you'll never know how explicit you'll write so. I always recommend R or NC-17 for that kinda stuff.
xoxLyssaxox PG13 - Swears, kisses, maybe mention of sex but not described like in a conversation

R - Violence, mild sex scene, frequent swearing

NC_17 - Detailed sex scenes, tons of swearing, etc.
